First off, I don't think the Reds would trade the only guy that still brings fans out to see that horrid excuse for a team.

Second, I'd be really leery about trading one of our starters. Hill is struggling, God only knows if Marquis will have another of his sudden relapses into suckiness as he's had so often. Offense is a problem with this team, but I don't know if creating one hole to plug another is going to do us any good. If we had to trade a major leaguer for another corner OFer, we would need to dump either a middle infielder and/or a Jones or Floyd in order to improve the team without hurting the roster too severely.

I highly doubt all 8 of those people are there just to see Griffey

what the heck, the dopes on 1st and 10 just said "unless they threw in soriano or lee or zambrano, i don't think griffey is going anywhere".

anyways, the espn express reporter didn't say anything we don't already know.

I'd consider getting rid of Soriano and his ridiculous contract. That doesn't mean I don't like Alfonso or his play this year, I just think its ridiculous to be paying him $15 million when hes 38.

There is no team out there that's going to take on Soriano's contract. We're stuck with him.

He actually said "unless they give back soriano AND lee or Z i don't think griffey is going anywhere" to which skip bayless replied "oh i'd do that" (i assume he meant from the reds perspective but who knows with him. And then Skip went on to say how he's the only draw on a team way under 500 and how they have to keep him around so people come to the park. That's the sad thing is that people really think like that. Instead of taking an aging superstar and moving him for prospects to rebuild and maybe have a team for the future that people will want to see, we'd rather hang onto said superstar so we can squeeze the last few bucks out of his chase for 600.

The only smart person on the show was the guy moderating it who said something of the effect "don't the reds sort of owe it to junior to let him play for a winner after he took the way under market value contract to try and help them win?"

Espn sucks. That is all.

Since that complete game shutout his ERA is around 5.35. Real Marquis isn't fun.

I have to wonder. Is anyone surprised Marquis didn't continue on his Cy Young pace? I'm not.

Oh, I'm positively stunned. Usually Jim Hendry's moves work out swimmingly.

A Cardinal fan buddy of mine warned me of this exact situation. He'll start out great, hit some high moment, and then crash for the remainder of the season leaving you scratching your head.

I really am scratching my head on this Marquis thing. His pitches have been way up in the zone in the last three or four starts. Its gotta be his release point, no?

I don't blame him entirely for last night though. He's a groundball pitcher and the D behind him wasn't great.

rofl..and just think, we're 7 games under .500 with him pitching great for the first 2 months.

Junior on the North Side?

Jun 21 - If the Cubs decide to pursue a left-handed hitter for the middle of their lineup -- because of Cliff Floyd's lingering health issues -- they might try to swing a deal for Ken Griffey Jr. before the July 31 deadline, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Griffey has a history with manager Lou Piniella and is unhappy in Cincinnati, where he was moved from center field to right. Not only are the Reds shopping him, but he has said privately to those close to him that he would welcome a move to Chicago.

Griffey is signed through next season with a team option for 2009 at salaries of $6.5 million each year. While the Cubs' uncertain ownership future makes acquiring a player with a multiyear contract more difficult, team officials say they haven't been told they can't take on salary beyond this year.

I believe that team option is 16.5 million , not 6.5.

all i know is this is pretty big bullcock...unless it gets done very VERY soon...because we are now 8.5 back...if this is a deal to be made...it needs to be made now IMO...

i don't really want the deal to be made...i am just saying

His salary for next year is 12.5 and in '09 he'd be due 16.5 if some team were dumb enough to exercise the option.

I'm in favor of getting Junior, depending on what it costs.

...at the top of the Cubs' wish list might be a left-handed hitter capable of hitting every day in the middle of the order. Cliff Floyd is that kind of player, but his health issues could leave just enough doubt to make a deal for a player such as Ken Griffey Jr. look like a fit by the July 31 deadline.

Well, he'd probably welcome a move to just about anywhere other than Cinci. If I were him, I'd ask to be traded to the Yankees or Boston so I can maybe get into the World Series before I retire.

How many trades have there been, historically, within a division? I just can't see this happening.

Cubs and Pirates traded players in 2003 that helped them reach the postseason. It happens.

Ugh. I can't believe my memory failed me that way. I'll just find a nearby hole and jump in. 8-[

No, you're right, it's rare but I wouldn't think that it's out of the question if both sides can agree. The Reds, like the Pirates, may be willing to take a longer view on their plans to compete. As a result, they may be willing to add another young starter (and other young players) to pitch alongside Homer Bailey. In the long run, they would be better off, if the players develop, because Griffey doesn't have too many productive years left (at least not in the NL).
