Right now, the Cubs have a four man bench because of the 13-man pitching staff. Beginning Tuesday, the Cubs play six straight in AL parks. With the DH, that would leave us with only 3 players on the bench. My feeling is by Tuesday, we need to exchange a pitcher for a bat.

It doesn't look like Ward will be ready by then and Murton has to stay down a minimum of 10 days. So, who will we bring up to be the bat or will we go to Texas with only three players on the bench and a 13-man pitching staff?

If we call anybody up at this point, I'd have to guess it would be Scott Moore.

I was kind of thinking along the same lines as Jersey. I see this situation with 13 pitchers leading to problems in the upcoming series vs. SD.

Call up Jake Fox and DH him everyday!

Too bad he's not on the 40 man and they would never do that anyways.

I think it will depend on what happens during the next 3 days. If the starters go deep and the bullpen stays untaxed, they may call up Ward or Moore. Ward should be okay to pinch hit within a couple days if he's starting at DH in AAA. I would say there is an outside shot that Cedeno could be called up.

If anything, the DH makes it easier to deal with fewer bench players. You don't need to pinch hit for any pitchers, or make any double switches, so a 3 man bench is more tolerable.

Yeah, I agree. If you need to PH, it will be for your worst hitter (Izturis), and the odds are virtually 100% that our bench guys each game will be one of the 3 middle infielders, the backup catcher, and Pagan/Jones.

Or, they could just RELEASE SCOTT EYRE.

Yeah, if they go back to 12 pitchers and call somebody up. The question is who do they call up.

That's just crazy talk. Don't be silly.

it also makes it easier to go with 11 pitchers

Daryle Ward if he's healthy and Moore if he isn't. 12 pitchers is already too many. 13 is ridiculous.

Daryle Ward (left hip strain) began a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Iowa. Ward was expected to be the designated hitter, and play first base in a couple games over the weekend. He can be activated from the disabled list Tuesday, and the team is expected to get back to 12 pitchers at that time.

See, the problem with that is, it just makes too much sense.

Lucky 13: The Cubs likely will see their 13-man pitching staff return to 12 when they begin a six-game road trip next week in Texas.

Daryle Ward, on the disabled list since June 3 with a hip strain, could rejoin the team. Ward started his rehab Thursday at Iowa and will see time at first base this weekend.

“By the time we get to Texas we’ll get back to 12 pitchers,” Piniella said.
