Clemens line against the Pirates, who, coming into the game, was collectively OPSing .694 and on pace to score a whopping 672 runs in 2007:

IP: 6.0

Pitches/Strikes: 108/69

Hits: 5

Walks: 2

SO: 7

HR: 0

Quotes from the media and Yankees:

Hero: Clemens of course! His season debut was everything Yankee fans could ask for. His line was good enough (6 innings, 5 hits, 3 runs, 2 walks and 7 strikeouts) but it was the heroes' welcome and playoff atmosphere his presence created in Yankee Stadium that made the day truly special.

This is the start of something we hope will be very special for us the rest of the way, at a point in our season where we think we're making a statement about who we are.

Good grief.

Well, when you consider the circumstances......

-44 years old

-didn't have spring training

-groin problems

-coming off an 88 pitch outing in the minors

-Yanks need a spark

-just cured cancer last night

-son has a game tomorrow

-dog died in the 2nd inning

-had diarrhea between innings

-woke up from a coma this morning

That was the greatest game ever pitched!

I love the fact that despite signing in the American league, his first three starst are projected to be NL teams:

Pit

NYM

Col

and then Toronto I think.

Mets'll punk him.

Remember that 4 months of Clemens is costing the Yankees about $26 million after luxury taxes, not just $19 million.

Even Hendry could spend 20 million better than that....

now you've simply gone too far.

Yeah I don't think that's possible.

im confused

Hmm...let's see here...

Glendon Rusch: $3.25M (not even pitching so in 2006: 7.46 ERA, 1.79 WHIP, 62 ERA+ in 66.3 IP)

Jacque Jones: $4M (.236/.300/.330/.630)

Cesar Izturis: $4.15M (.245/.306/.299/.606)

Scott Eyre: $3.5M (7.17 ERA, 2.34 WHIP, 60 ERA+ in 21.1 IP)

Henry Blanco: $1.8M (Backup catcher, .194/.231/.250/.481)

Wade Miller: $1.5M (10.54 ERA, 2.20 WHIP, 41 ERA+ in 13.2 IP)

There's $18.2M that the Cubs are spending this year. The Yankees are playing Clemens $18.5M (pro-rated) this year. Which would you rather have?
