Hey all,

Don't post often, but I read the forum pretty much every day. I was listening to all the discussions on local radio that while the Twins would want Hunter back, they'll probably look to move him if they're out of contention. With Morneau and Santana contracts coming up they probably can't afford to keep him anyways. Additionally their end of the rotation has been weak and Bartlett isn't getting it done at SS for them.

I was thinking something like Jones, Murton, Izturis, and a young arm (Marshall, Marmol, etc) for Hunter.

Jones takes over center for them (plus they have a youngster waiting in the wings and Murton takes over LF with Cuddyer in RF. Izturis might be able to produce more than Bartlett and keeps them strong defensively at that position. The young arm take the #4 spot with Santana, Bonzer, Silva, and Slowee rounding out the rotation.

Granted Hunter might leave at the end of the season, but I look at this trade as Murton and the young arm being the value. We can keep Floyd as an extra OF and use DeRosa as an emergency OF if necessary and send Pagan back to the minors.

Soriano, Pie, Lee, Ramirez, Hunter, Barrett, De Rosa, Theriot is a pretty great lineup.

That's way overpaying for a FA to be like Hunter.

not to mention we already have this kid named felix pie

My rationale was Hunter can play RF and in order to get rid of Jones we almost have to include Murton or a young arm.

If it was someone like O'Malley would that make it better?

Hunter isn't even all that good. He's better than the Cubs RFers, but you're talking about a steep price to pay for a 4 month rental, and there's no way you want to sign him to the extension he'll get. He's a soon-to-be 32 year old with a lifetime OPS+ of 104 and severe OBP issues. This isn't somebody the Cubs need.

A trade for Hunter would be 100% unneccessary.

A 31 year old OF posting a career season in a contract year? Hendry already has a 6 year deal printing out for him to sign this offseason.

Sadly I had already considered Hendry doing something like this.

And thankfully there's a great chance this is Hendry's last year.

But if the sale takes time to go through, that will delay the overhaul, potentially leaving Hendry in charge of decision making during the free agency period.

I think it's really really unlikely that the Cubs sign any FAs this offseason with the future of the team up in the air. It just doesn't happen. The first priority this offseason will be selling the team and getting new ownership in place, while maintaining the status quo. Hendry won't be given the green light to hand out any long-term deals without the prospective new owner's OK, for fear of losing a potential buyer and/or lowering the sale price. Hendry might even be fired at season's end in favor of a lame-duck placeholder if management believes he'll do something that would make it harder to sell the team.

I would not worry about Hunter getting a 6 year deal this offseason from us.

You know what I could see with Jones, Murton, Izturis and 2 of those young arms? A trade to Baltimore for Jay Payton and Miguel Tejada.

Jones could play CF. Corey Patterson's a free agent after 2007, so the Orioles could just DFA him. Jones is making the same salary as Corey this year, and will make the same salary as Payton next year.

Murton could platoon with Gibbons in LF this year and then become the full time LF with Gibbons becoming the full time DH or 1B (depending on where they put Huff) after Kevin Millar is gone. They could just speed up the process by DFAing Millar as well, since he's a free agent after 2007.

Izturis would play SS for the rest of the year.

Payton could platoon in RF with Floyd for the rest of this year, and next year TBD.

Tejada is under contract through 2009.

I wouldn't mind ending up with Tejada. I'm guessing they'd want something more as far as offense is concerned. Maybe throw in a Fox or Craigh, and try to keep one of the arms.

Prior to the news of the sale, I could have seen a path for Hendry to acquire Tejada at the deadline. With Soriano, Ramirez, Lee and Tejada, the Cubs could live with DeRosa/Theriot at 2B, Murton/Floyd in RF and Felix Pie taking his time to come into his own.

However we have to deal with the reality. Given the uncertainty of the finances with an imminent sale of the ballclub in the works, and a GM with an expiring contract, who's probably on his way out, if Hendry does make a move at the deadline, my guess is that it will be for a player who's contract expires at the end of the season.

Assuming our biggest offensive weaknesses are at SS and C, is there a productive SS or C on the trading block, who will also be a free agent after 2007?

If the Cubs could somehow winde up with Tejada for the Price of Jones + Mrton and MiL pitcher I would be ecstatic.

I think he may be able to help them get in contention for the division as well.

I don't know if he's on the trading block, but Neifi's contract is up after this year.

The best catchers that will be free agents after the year are Pudge and Posada and I'm sure neither are on the block. Omar Vizquel is the only shortstop worth much that's a free agent*, but I also doubt he's on the block.

*EDIT: That's if you don't count A-Rod.

We are not getting Tejada for Jones-Murton and Marshall/Marmol. That is crazy talk. The O's will likely want at least 2 maybe 3 good young arms.

To be clear, the "crazy" idea I came up with above was a 5 for 2: Murton, Jones, Izturis and 2 pitchers for Tejada and Payton. It may still be "crazy talk."

I haven't followed Tejada this year, but I like HoopsCubs idea of how we have our IF and OF set up with him. Definitely something I could live with.
