Jermaine Dye-OF- White Sox Jun. 4 - 8:44 am et

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the White Sox and Yankees have discussed a trade that would swap Jermaine Dye for Bobby Abreu.

The newspaper quotes "one White Sox source close to the situation" as saying that the deal "has started to take on some life." ''You're paid to work for a team for whatever period of time, give 100 percent to that club, and if you get dealt away, give 100 percent to the next club," Dye said.

There's lots of rumors about Abreu, but everything that I have read sounds like old age has snuck up on him quickly. Add to that the fact that he has a very big contract to deal with and I can't see Reinsdorf agreeing to that trade.

I don't see how this deal would benefit either team. The Yanks would free up payroll insomuch as Dye is an FA after this year, but to what end? This year's FA class is pretty weak, no?

I'm of the belief that a change of scenery would help Dye; not Abreu.

If the trade occurs, I think New York gets the better of the deal.

Hard to tell if the story has legs on its own merit, or because the Yanks happen to be in Chicago this week.

Why would the White Sox do something that would make their already bad offense worse?

Abreu and Dye have been pretty similar this season, Bobby with more OBP and Dye with more SLG. Prior to last year Abreu was regularly the better of the 2 players. And they are the same age. Perhaps he makes them worse, but it would be quite difficult. And maybe he makes them better.

It would definitely be a change of scenery inspired move.

They envy the Cubs bad front office?

Was Abreu re-signed? I thought this was the last year of his contract also.

I thought it was a $16M club option in 2008 or $2M buyout. I don't recall the Yankees agreeing to pick up the option as a condition for Abreu agreeing to waive his no trade clause. I seem to remember the Phillies paid him "extra" to waive the clause.

that is correct -- they paid him 1.5M to waive

that's better than the arod + melky + multiple young arms for buehrle + crede trade phil rogers proposed.

Did he really? The Yanks would have to be nuts to do that deal.

I thought the deal was Arod + Melky for Buehrle + Crede + multiple young arms. The Yankees would get the young arms, not the Sox.
