Dave Kaplan just mentioned on WGN 720 radio that Murton was not supposed to be in the lineup today but Cliff Floyd strained an Oblique muscle this morning and couldn't go.

I don't know if this was mentioned before, if so, never mind. Kaplan mentioned this in response to a caller who was berating Murton for his play today and, well, I guess ever.

Any other info on this or how long Floyd will likely be out?

Ha Floyd is the most fragile person Ive ever seen

How many baseball players have "strained their oblique" this year? I don't recall seeing so many players screwing up their obliques in years past as much as this year

Considering his age and contract situation, Floyd is essentially disposible as far the Cobs are concerned. If this means Murton gets more playing time, then it's probably good news.

We knew it wouldn't be long before Floyd got hurt. This could be a good thing.

Not if we have to watch Murton. Trade him while you can. He's a bad outfielder, no real speed and can't hit with men on. Pagan can fill his role and can play defense.

Yea but Murton can't "catch the dang ball" as Lou was yelling about.

But Pagan can't hit at all.

And he's not an especially good defender, either.

He hits as well as Murton and at least has some power, which warning track Matt doesn't seem to have. Other than some OBP what does Murton add? Defense-no. Speed-no. power-no. Just what does he add other than misguided belief that he'll be some kind of star?

No, he doesn't. Not even close, really.

QFT. Matt Murton belongs on a major league roster. Angel Pagan does not.

You do realize Murton adds about 60 points of OBP, the single most important offensive stat? Pagan's power isn't enough to make him an average hitter, just cause he doesn't get on base at all.

At any rate, I'd be real surprised if we don't see Floyd hit the DL after today's events. Odds are pretty good we suspend Barrett for a while, and we can't really afford a short bench. I really think we'll DL Floyd and bring up Soto.

Are we really arguing over a below average player and an even more below average player?

You're right, I really should know better.

I disagree with the notion that Murton is below average, though. I think Murton is more or less exactly average for a corner outfielder. Average is pretty valuable.

In what alternate universe does Pagan hit as well as Murton?

Not in a lineup already filled with several average or below average players. I like Murton, but I think he's below average in base running, defense and average offensively. That's why I call him below average.

That's not Murton's fault, it's Hendry's.
