Steve Stone on the Score today made the point about prospects in the Cubs system not being taught the basics. It was in response to a quote by Piniella. But the thing is, the everyday players on this team for the most part did not come from this system. Why do they continue to fail in these situations? OK, I guess you can insert the obligatory bash Hendry answer here.

I think they call it 'Cubbie swagger'

The organization has for ages valued physical tools and hollow statistics over quantifiable skills, therefore they bring in players from other clubs who fit this mold (Pierre, Soriano, Jacque).

Steve Stone is a very smart man. That and Jim Hendry is a complete idiot.

Steve Stone is the reason we choked down the stretch in 2004. Just ask Dusty Baker and Kent Mercker.

Nice to see that Stone is still in Chicago while those two are (pretty much) out of baseball completely.

Seems like they treat player development more like the NFL, when baseball is clearly more of a game that relies on good skills, and hence good skill development.

I wish Stone was still in the booth along with Chip.

Stone means more to Chicago baseball than pretty much anyone other than the few Cub legends we have had on the field. That and Harry/Jack.

I think that's really sad because it indicates just how bad we've been. But it's true, no matter what his detractors try to say.

I actually went a game with a friend recently who was not a baseball fan. But he had read Moneyball, and as I explained to him the Cubs' approach with "toolsy" players, even he got a chuckle over how they were in the dark ages. Not that Moneyball should be baseball gospel necessarily, but some forward thinking would be a welcome change.

I wonder if the new owners will keep Len and Bob or go with a new announcing team...could we see the return of Stoney?

Gunna get swept, and didn't need to. This team's having its June swoon in May. Sinking like the Titanic.

Did anyone else watching on MLB.tv just get an extremely random DirecTV cut-in?
