I know I've made promises to myself in the past that I simply have not held to when this organization did idiotic crap, but if this goes through for anyone short of Jesus H. Christ, I'm done for good. This team will NEVER see another dollar or minute of my time. Edited by Dr. Cub

I've been saying Murton is likely on the block since early April. There is just no room for a starting RH outfielder on this team.

Guys what are you freaking out about? Trading our most promising young positional player (edit: Currently on the 25 man roster) for some help in a position that is pretty much a crapshoot is an awesome idea....

Oh wait, no its not..

The Chicago Cubs desperately need bullpen help, and reportedly would part with outfielder Matt Murton in the right deal

This is going to get ugly. What kind of overpriced reliver will Hendry be able to net for Murton?

Agreed, but what do we do with Murt? He can't play RF (not well) and LF is going to by occupied for the next 8 years.

This is what happens when you hire a "win now" manager. You bag on low cost, perfectly capable players in exchange for players like Jones and Floyd, and then you trade said low cost players to try and address a need that's better addressed through the minor league system.

The Cubs are seriously a rudderless ship, a team without any discernable plan. They deserve to lose.

While I think it would be best not to trade him, I wouldn't exacty consider him untouchable. It all depends on the deal. It seems like for every team there is at least one guy who is severely overrated by its fans. There is no debate that player is Murton for the Cubs.

Why are you guys shocked?

I'm not shocked. It seems like every day there's just one more thing to point to and say "They have no idea what they're doing".

Well, the "!?" at the end of the thread title made me think mdwilla was surprised.

I disagree. No one thinks Murton is a superstar. What they think is that he's a low cost option to produce at a decent clip, with a good chance of improving.

It's nonsense like this that explains why the Cubs would make such a move.

Those who want to see Murton play do so becauase he's a cost effective option capable of putting up a solid 800+ OPS with a .350 or better OBP, not because they think he's great. But when you support such a player, the naysayers want to say you severely overrate said player because they assume that in order to really like a player it means you think he's tremendously productive. You don't have to be tremendously productive to be tremendously valuable to a major league roster. I like Murton because he is exactly what this team has lacked, and needed, for quite some time.

People, including the Cubs, just don't get that.

Good point. I've feared Murton has been on the block for a while, and not because the Cubs can't live without him, but because the Cubs motivation for trading Murton, and target for using him as bait, was most likely going to be all wrong.

If you put him in a package for Miguel Cabrera, I'd pack his bags and fly the plane. If you give him spotty playing time and his numbers suffer, then try and "shore up the bullpen" by trading him like some extra piece, well, that's just so Cubs like.

Exactly. He's not the kind of player you trade for bullpen help. He's a piece to be used in a bigger deal, if you're not going to keep him.

Sunnydoo,

Jesus Saves, but Gretzky scores on the rebound.

Murton's my favorite player on this team (and no I don't think he's a superstar). Hopefully they trade him to a team I could become a fan of (i.e. not the Cards or Yankees). That way I could just give up on the Cubs forever and not have to subject myself to this crap for the rest of my life.
