[insert Jacque Jones/Izturis/Cedeno clueless at the plate joke here]

But really, you're better safe than sorry.

of course it's fine with you -- you'll never be there

With the exception of the champagne in the winning of something, is that really too much to ask of a workplace?

Yeah, I saw this on ESPN earlier today. I think this will become pretty commonplace among the MLB

I drink at work all the time, it's quite nice. Of course, I work from home.

Exactly. This isn't a huge deal.

Agreed.

It's just like the A's in that it's a liabilty issue. The players can walk accross the street or drive to the burbs and drink. If the clubs truly cared they would arrange limo services, identify problem drinkers and get them care, etc. This does not solve the problem, just a sugar coating.

If the Cubs were identifying problem drinkers and trying to help them, I'm not so sure the story would get out; I'd imagine the player would have a certain amount of protection and privacy.

i don't see the harm in having a beer in the locker room after a game.

hancock was out at a bar drinking heavily, not in the clubhouse doing keg stands.

this move is PR and it's stupid.

Agreed.

Same here, my dad and I were talking about this earlier and we both agreed that it'd be better to have players winding down with a few drinks in the clubhouse after the game than have them go out on the town. This doesn't solve anything.

right. there's no need for them to announce this publicly and make a big deal out of it.

I think you're both wrong.

Staying silent on the matter was not an option. This is a public show against DUIs more than anything. It's largely meaningless in and of itself. But the fact that MLB has been so accepting of drinking and driving in the past was a big problem. Banning drinking during team activities that occur just prior to players getting in their cars is a smart move.

There's still far too much acceptance of drinking and driving in this country. People think of it like speeding, where the only thing that matters is whether you get caught, rather than whether you do it in the first place.

Not really a big deal to me. If players are going to want to drink, they will do it no matter what. Now they just can't do it in the clubhouse.

Well put. Drinking and driving is a HUGE problem in this country.

I really don't understand the "oh, it's better for them to drink in the clubhouse since they'll just be going out and drinking instead" line of thinking. By that logic, we should all be able to drink at work at the end of the day. Yes, I know with the players their "work" is technically over, but they're still in their place of "business." How hard is it to wait until you leave there before you do any drinking? If we're depriving them of something they NEED to do, that's indicative of a problem, not a lost privilege.
