Should we start a poll on who the Cubs should take to get the boards feelings? The list shouldnt be that long because they are picking 3.

good idea, here is what I think:

Best case- Price

Worst case- Vitters

Suprize- Parker

Who we should get if stiff on the board- Wieters

The best way to do it would probably do a poll of all the top picks(including Price, Porcello, guys who may get taken in front of us). Then do another poll with the top guy from the previous poll excluded, then repeat that to emulate our Top 3 preference.

Price will almost certainly be the top choice... everyone knows I'm a big fan of Wieters, and even I'd go with Price if he's available. I'm guessing Wieters would be #2 after him, and then either Porcello or Vitters.

It will almost be better for the the board (less heated banter) if Wieters is gone at #2. If Price and Wieters are off the choices become a little more equal.

Regardless, I don't think the Cubs take Wieters, its the smart move.

its the dumb move

Impressive...

How about: it'd be the dumb move to pass on Wieters.

His comments on the Cubs' pick of Vitters-

Vitters is the top high school bat in the country and is very polished for his age, which means he is likely to move as quickly as any position player in the draft. The Cubs do like catcher Matt Wieters but they can't go over slot price during their ownership transition. They're considering right-hander Jarrod Parker as well. But I can't see them passing on Vitters.

My, how the mighty (Brackman) have fallen.

If he falls to our second round pick, I would love to take him.

We don't have a 2nd round pick (to WAS for Soriano).

I'd be stunned if KC took Detwiler...doesn't seem like their style these days to take the signability guys.

I think there are better options for the sandwich pick than another major project of a former two-sport star who's throwing in the 80s now.

Hopefully Porcello falls!

ETA: Of course, if the Cubs can't go over slot for Wieters in the first round, then I can't see them suddenly being able to do it with their sandwich pick or later picks.

Good, so the bitching about not getting Wieters can stop before it starts.

yeah, i won't bitch about the cubs wasting millions on samardzija and other assorted major league players, but then all of a sudden having to obey slot money the year that a big piece to the puzzle is available in the draft.

I have no idea. Just bitching in general. It still seems ridiculous to me that the Cubs have to be handcuffed by money during this draft, when the actual budget for a draft is such a small part of the overall spending on the team. It seems to me that as long as the Trib owns the Cubs, they should operate like a large market team, and the next person coming in knows that they're buying a large market team.

Well then, I'm right there with you. I'll be disappointed if a signability guy like Wieters or Porcello falls to their sandwich pick and they have to pass.

If either of those guys falls all the way to the sandwich pick, and we don't take them, then I'm going to reach a Pierreian level of pissed off at the Cubs.

Every team is handcuffed by slotted amounts and each team goes beyond it at various times, MLB does frown upon it. I'm sure the Cubs heard about it from Selig.

Supposedly Bud talked to the Yankees, Red Sox and Cubs after last year's draft but it was thought that all three would once again ignore the slot money when they felt like it (until this came out about the Cubs impending sale).

And for the record, I don't think Porcello or Wieters will fall to the sandwich picks despite their Boras-connection and contract demands.

I'm sure they did too, but unless those draft slots are a hard and fast rule, the Cubs are free to tell Bud to F off.... something they did when the drafted Prior, Brownlie, E. Patterson, and a lot of guys last year.

It doesn't work like that though, there's a reason why the slots are so important to the draft and signs. What happens if they don't? I have no idea, but I assume MLB is under bend but don't break type of ploicy.
