It can be argued that Piniella over-managed in winning the game in the 10th inning.

I think though, there was also a method to his madness.

His many changes was a way to tell this team to pay attention and be prepared to play when called upon.

With Baker and his laid back style, last year these changes would never have occured. It is just another way of Lou telling this team, it is a new year, so be prepared.

Piniella is a *lot* more involved in game strategy. Makes for very entertaining times for Cub fans, that is for sure.

My issue was more with the constant bullpen shuffling. Why does Wuertz get yanked after one batter because he walked him but Eyre stays in after his first batter gets a double?

My guess is because Eyre has been used the least. Also, Lou knows that Eyre needs help regaining his confidence and there are only so many blowouts... It's not like Scott Eyre is going to be traded or released; He's going to be a fixture in the 'pen so he has to start pitching better so that the team can benefit from his presence.

The scary part is that lefties are hitting him well.

Because Lou can't stand when his pitchers walk guys. A walk is inexcusable. At least with a double, you are challening the hitter. You lost the challenge, but you didn't give him a free pass.

Nice winning streak, but we've been playing the Pirates and Nationals. I would hope a $110 mil team could beat that level of opponent.

You can go a long way towards 90+ wins just by beating up on the crap teams and playing 500 against the good ones. Especially in the NL where there's an abundance of crap, and not a lot of the goods.

agreed. Back to the old saying, "beat the teams you should".

Last year's team sucked at that.

They were the worst team, they shouldn't have beaten anyone

hahaha... I got a good chuckle out of that one!

Not sure if this has been mentioned already in this thread, but anyone remember the last time the Cubs won 5 in a row?

Mid-July 2005, one win each for Prior, Zambrano, Maddux and two for Wood. (This on the heels of an eight-game losing streak.)

It all just blurs together man.

Under Dusty, pretty much every win seemed like it came off the heels of a losing streak.

I'm on board with the bullpen shuffling being a bit too much, but let's think about it:

Last year, Dusty would have had Gooz pitch until his arm fell off because he was doing well. To hell with whether it would hurt him in the long run or not.

I'll take some quicker bullpen moves over burning through starter arms at a record pace and building up abuse points like there's no tomorrow.

It doesn't work when you're one of "the teams you should beat"

I bet if somebody did a simulated matchup on a video game to predict the outcome of a game pitting the 2006 Cubs against themselves, the game would crash.
