I think if the Raiders want the most sure thing this year out of college, they should just draft Calvin Johnson, trade for/sign a FA QB, draft a project QB in the later rounds, and call it good.

Agreed. I think the "can't miss" picks in this draft are Calvin Johnson, Joe Thomas, Gaines Adams and Laron Landry. I also feel very good about Marshawn Lynch being a good NFL running back, though I'd pick AD ahead of him based on his tremendous potential if he stays healthy.

John Clayton writes about the draft.

Link.

For trades, this draft will be a bonanza, and the exciting part is that several veterans are in play. The Chiefs got the hot stove draft league going by sending Dante Hall to the Rams. Quarterback Trent Green of the Chiefs (Miami being the main target) and defensive tackle Kris Jenkins of the Panthers (the Rams being the main team) are the main pre-draft attractions. Larry Johnson of the Chiefs, Lance Briggs of the Bears, Michael Turner of the Chargers, Justin Smiley of the 49ers, Brian Kelly of the Bucs, Eric Barton and Justin McCareins of the Jets, and Josh McCown are just some of the names being thrown around.

Todd McShay thinks that the Raiders will still take Russell and that Calvin Johnson will go number 2, but maybe not to the Lions.

Assuming Russell goes No. 1 to the Raiders, the Lions will put their pick up for public auction. The Buccaneers, Redskins and Falcons are all rumored to have interest in trading up for Johnson, but striking a deal will be much harder than most think. The Lions would ideally like to trade down within the top 10, acquire an extra pick or two and still draft Clemson DE Gaines Adams or Wisconsin OT Joe Thomas in the first round.

Where is Matt Millen?

In today's Philadelphia Inquirer, the Eagles were quoted as saying that Winston Justice may not suit up for a single game in 2007. Tra (I refuse to call him William) Thomas and Jon Runyan will play the entire year if healthy. I loved the pick of Justice last year, but I really don't know how much I like the idea of a player having two years away from real game action.

You're preaching to the choir here.

Here's an interesting article on why the Raiders should no draft Russell. He compares Russell to Akili Smith.

Quinn's a much safer pick than JMR, IMO.

What FA or realistic trading options at QB are out there? I've heard McCown from the Lions or C-Pep. Neither of those are good options, imo. I agree with you that they should have grabbed Lienart last year. If I was a Raiders fan, I wouldn't be upset if they took a QB because honestly, they really need one.

Edit: Could be totally wrong here but this is my impression from the outside looking in.

Hey how about that, comparing a black quarterback who he thinks will be a bust, to the most notorious black quarterback bust in draft history! That's like every good young white forward being compared to Larry Bird.

Anthony Gonzalez really reminds me of Ed McCaffery.

For Colts fans, he really reminds us of a healthy Brandon Stokley-there is a pretty big contingent of Colts fans that say that if he's available at 32, the Colts have to take him. I would like him, but I'm not sure I'm quite completely in that camp.

same here, except he's faster and half a foot shorter

Maybe I was think of Braden Stokely or Matt Jones. Can't quite remember.

I agree. Russell could just as easily be compared to Randall Cunningham than Akili Smith.

In truth, I think he'll be somewhere in between. I doubt he'll ever be as good as Cunningham, but I don't think he'll be a bust either.

Just read this, don't know how much it will effect the draft status of AP:

Former Oklahoma running back Adrian Peterson, an almost certain top-10 pick in the first round of Saturday's NFL draft, re-injured his collarbone in the Sooners' loss in the Fiesta Bowl on New Year's Day -- an injury that has not been previously disclosed except to NFL teams.

Did you even read the article? He doesn't just say "I think Russell is the next Akili Smith so Russell will suck". The same exact things that were being said about Akili Smith in 1999 are being said about Russell.

Plus, he goes beyond just comparing the two players as he compares the two teams (1999 Bengals and 2007 Raiders) as well.

Personally, I'd like to see them take Drew Stanton in the second round but wouldn't be disappointed with Trent Edwards either.

I don't know if it'll effect his draft status, but there is definitely nothing wrong with not disclosing that information so long as the NFL teams were given proper notice of it.

No west coast bias involved, right CR?

Stupidest quote about the draft so far:

"You'd love to have a guy who can make an immediate impact," Gibbs said. "But to be quite truthful, you look at our football team, where could a player step in here right now and say: 'I'm taking over'? Where is that? That makes us feel good. I don't feel panicked that we have to take any one thing. It's hard to say that somebody would just step into any position right now."

I don't see how that's that stupid-unless you're implying that the Redskins don't have anywhere near that depth. That is the goal of every team though to be exactly what Gibbs is talking about.
