Don't know the reason as I am watching the game on mute. Looks like everyone who still has a Mark Grace man boner can relax and continue the (hopefully) fruitless crusade to get his number retired.

What about the CPatt number-retiring crusaders, though?

Speaking of CP, he cost his team the game tonight with baserunning screw ups on consecutive plays in the 9th inning. So glad he is doing it to someone else now.

Or Bob Dernier?

Is there any other kind?

And also...

Bitter much?

I think he means having a boner FOR a man, not having a boner AS a man.

Anyway, how's Alex Sanchez doing these days?

the gracie hate stems from the fact he's a giant douche.

Really? I've met him a few times and he's always seemed like a nice guy to me. What specifically does he do that transforms him into a female hygiene product?

For a while he never missed a chance to take pot-shots at the cubs, including a very snarky comment right after the Dbacks won the WS. He continued that for a while as a Dbacks announcer. He's finally backing off a bit, though, because i think he wants back in the good graces of Cubdom.

He also never fails to look like a jealous man-baby when it comes to Sosa, and his unceasing attacks toward him have gotten old.

Basically, he's always been bitter that Sammy was more popular, and he was very bitter about not being re-signed, even though it was the right move for the Cubs, as he was well past his prime.

Well I can't say I blame him on most of those issues. If I wasn't resigned by the team I've played my whole career for and gave everything for, I'd be a little mad/bitter. Players do that all the time. I'd rather a player get pissed about not being resigned than ditch the team to make a few extra million like so many players these days do.

the whole "gave everything I had" argument does not pass muster with me. Dude was WELL COMPENSATED for his time here. It wasn't like he played five seasons pro bono. And he was what? 36 or 37 when the Cubs let him go? If we re-signed a fading 37-year-old 1b with no pop for nostalgia reasons, this board will blow up. Decisions like that are what have caused years of mediocrity.

besides he ultimately got a ring because of the decision. But he still felt compelled to take a shot at the Cubs just moments after winning? Sorry dude. Lame. And douchey. Enjoy your ring. And enjoy the fact a ton of Cub fans still loved you. If many have since stopped, it's because he's always running his yap.

I'm not saying that it wasn't the correct decision. However, I can understand why he'd be a little mad. Maybe he took it too far, but I still understand why he'd be bitter about the situation. When you play for a team for so long and then they suddenly don't want you anymore, it hurts the ego a litttle bit.

And people holding a grudge over a comment he made after winning a ring is about as lame as the comment itself.

Well he did still put up good numbers in 2001, similar to his career numbers. We did get similar production out of Matt Stairs though. He had the huge power drop off in 2002, but was moderately productive with a decent OBP. At that time, however, we actually got good numbers from Fred McGriff. Then he absolutely hit a wall and sucked in 2003 in just 66 games.

So you could argue that 2001 wouldn't have been so cut and dry, but after that I would agree yes.

2001

Grace: .298 .386 .466 @ $3M

Stairs: .250 .358 .462 (128 G) @ $3.2M

McGriff: .282 .383 .559 (49 G) @ $6.5M prorated

*Stairs only spent 89 GS at 1B, Zuleta (.217 .288 .415 23 GS) and Coomer (.261 .316 .390 14 GS) also saw time at 1B.

Pretty close to a wash in terms of money spent and production. Our corner OF was fine with Rondell White and Sammy, so Stairs wasn't going to play anywhere else, so it would have been one or the other.

2002

Grace: .252 .351 .386 @ $3M

McGriff: .273 .353 .505 @ $7.25M

A bit of extra money and an extra 100+ in SLG.

I don't know what Grace wanted at the time, but a two year deal with the second year seeing him as a part time player (handing off the reigns to Hee Seop Choi perhaps?) would have been fine by me, compared to what we actually did. We had some decent power at positions like 2B and SS in 2002, so we might have been able to take less power at 1B. We also had some decent SP that year (other than the horrid Jason Bere), so a 1B with weak power wouldn't have stopped us if we had a decent bullpen or good bench. Things the extra $4.25M from McGriff (possibly more if Grace would have given a home town discount) might have been able to patch up a few of those things.

In conclusion? I don't know if I agree or disagree with you, but we were making bad decisions anyways.

if it was a one-time deal, I probably wouldn't care, but he did it quite a bit.

grace wasn't let go for McGriff. he was let go for Choi, who then got hurt, and then was left on the bench for mcgriff who was traded for about 6 weeks too late. I was super happy for Grace when he won a ring, especially since he was key in Game 7

While I agree at the time his comments were less than appropriate, as has been posted he has backed off in recent memory.

He was probably more ticked at the Cubs management then he was at the Cubs also--as we all are; so does that make all of us douches as well? And people are just as split about Sammy as Grace, and I don't think Grace's Sosa comments had anything to do with him "being more popular" -- he never had a problem with it with Ryno. It was probably stuff that none of us were privy to--locker room things that went on long before the Cubs "outed" Sammy.

Anyway just my 2 cents about that.

So...Pie wearing #20 huh?...

Your timeline's off by a couple of years. Grace was let go after 2000, Choi wasn't hurt and left on the bench until 2003.
