Not if you have a smart base runner that is able to get a very good lead because the pitcher isn't paying enough attention to him. In that case your chances are very good unless the umpire misses the call.

I don't know why you'd be shocked. Before Saturday (the last time I saw the stats) DeRosa was only behind Pie in P/PA. It goes all the way down to the position player who sees the least pitches of anybody-Theriot.

What I'm trying to get at is whether or not stealing third is a 'dumb' thing to do. It doesn't really strike me as being so. I would think that the success rate for stealing third is higher than it is for stealing second, which wouldn't make it that dumb. I'm just wondering if anyone has the stats to back it up either way.
