would it help Miller if he actually had consistant starts? with the long break in between could that be affecting him? He hasn't had a chance to even start a rhythm

Well, he'll get a chance on Sunday to see what he can do on 4 days rest. The Cubs cannot afford to give him consistent starts after that if he doesn't pitch well on Sunday.

to give wade some credit, the Ump had a pretty bad strike zone (at least, it looked that way to me.)

Still though, he hasn't done much to excite me any.

Wade's Numbers:

9 ERA

2.33 WHIP

3 K/9

6 BB/9

14 MPH fastball with no movement

0 ounces of grit or spunk

A 0 GRIT factor is unacceptable to any championship team. He should be cut immediately for his lack of zork.

Ahh yes, the only stat that can't be improved. A player can't learn FIRE. and INTENSITY.

Is this the 8th or 9th game this year where the ump had a bad strikezone?

Without a doubt, it's Wade second bad umpire experience. Those 6ER in MIL were flukey...

Yes, and it only impacts the Cubs.

I can think of 2 instances off the top of my head where the umps had bad strike zones this season... but I'm not saying that should be any excuse. Players NEED to adjust to the bad zones.

Somebody complains about the zone every game. Miller should get no credit for another supposed bad zone. He's a formerly decent pitcher whose career has been derailed by injury. By all accounts he's trying as hard as he can, working his butt off and giving it his all, but he's just not major league caliber. The Cubs can't afford that type of pitching performance.

That's the most important point. The Cubs aren't good enough to deal with Wade Miller peforming below replacement level.

The bad zone didn't affect Miller's pitching performance-it caused him to walk a guy or 2 in the 3rd that should have been struck out, but he got out of that inning without any damage. That's the only time it was a big deal, and the ump was very consistent-a tight zone for both sides.

I didn't see the entire game, but that was my impression as well. There were 2 pitches that I remember where even my wife asked what was wrong with the ump. There was also 1 Maddux pitch the next half inning that I felt the ump was giving back to us. Other than that, I didn't see much of a problem.

You guys have it all wrong. Sure, Wade's not what he used to be. He doesn't have the stuff anymore.

But just look at those stats from yesterday. 5 innings, 6 hits, 4 walks. Only 3 runs. The conclusion is simple: Wade's a grinder!

Yeah, people don't think of him as a firey guy any more, but they sure did back when he could bring the heat. Back then everybody knew he had that TEXAS GRIT!

Well boys, I've got news for you: texas grit don't just go away. See, it's just that it's quiter now, more professional. As he's gotten older, he's become more mature, become more a pitcher than a thrower.

Sure, he can't bring it, but that just makes him better: this tough guy gets through it all without some fancy curveball or blistering heat. How does he do it? He bears down, it's all focus and determination. Wade-y never lets a pitch out of his hand that's less than his best.

Focus and determination. Texas Grit.

10 baserunners in 5 innings. 3 ER.

That, boys and girls, is what I call a grinder.

And somebody out there probably believes this crap!

I was thinking.....this has to be depressing for Miller.

Imagine that you used to have 96-97 MPH stuff, and you try and reach back and it simply isn't there. Plus on the $$$ side, could you imagine if he never got hurt in 04, and continued to put up the #'s he did the past 3 years? He would have got a 4+ year deal at 10 Mil, at the very least. Yeah, he still is a milliionare, so I don't feel to bad, but a contract like that and you set up your kids, and their kids, and their kids, etc for life.

He's definitely grinding our playoff hopes into dust.

Plenty of teams make the playoffs with a complete :?: at the 5th starter spot.

Yeah, he hasn't just lost a MPH or two. This guy used to blast 97MPH heaters right by hitters. I agree it's got to be incredibly frustrating for Wade. And I have no doubt he's really trying his best. He just doesn't have it anymore.

Damn shoulders. You never know if they'll come back or not.

That has nothing to do with the Cubs season, unfortunately.

Yes it does. My point is that we can still win the Central regardless of performance from the fifth starter spot.

We could, but there's no reason to handicap your chances by throwing somebody out there.
