Well, VanceJergins I guess you have life figured out....... The worst school shooting in US history and I am crossing the line, I apologies.

Just curious Mordecai, why baseball? Why not close all govenment offices? Or the stock market? How about closing all colleges for a day?Wouldn't you just be encouraging the nuts?

I don't think people who go on shooting rampages give a hoot about MLB's response. That said, I don't see any reason to cancel the games. A moment of silence is a good suggestion, imo.

theonly reason to cancel a sporting event is if events have been precipitated that could endanger those attending games (ie 9/11)

Pete Rozell deeply regreted his decision not to cancel NFL games following the Kenneddy Assasination...IIRC.

okay, sure, something like that would qualify as well.

I think it would be great if the Nationals put a VT patch on their jerseys for the rest of the year.

DC is about 4-5 hours from there.

I see no reason that a person can't feel bad about the tragedy and still care about baseball at the same time. The two aren't mutually exclusive. Feeling bad about something doesn't mean you have to put everything else on hold and think of nothing else.

I know that after watching/reading about this all day I will be looking very forward to watching 24 and the Cubs game tonight.

Not to be insensitive, but we're in the middle of a war. American soldiers are fighting and dying every day. I feel bad when I read casualty reports from Iraq but I still follow baseball. I can see college athletics being suspended for a while, but pro sports should go on.

Are you implying I didn't know where Virgina Tech is in relation to DC? The Nationals market serves the state of Virgina. Hopefully you were just making a blanket statement.

I think games should only be cancelled when a tragedy occurs that has widespread ramifications for the nation (ie terrorist attack). CNN is quoting officials who say today's incident is the deadliest rampage in US history however, it appears to be an isolated event. As such, games should not be cancelled nationwide.

Whether for you, or for anyone else who may have read it and assumed it was closer than that. If something happens at Eastern Illinois, should the Cubs/Sox wear a patch? The commutes, TV rights, are the same.

U of I is about that far from Chicago. I could see the Cubs putting a patch on if 32 students were gunned down @ U of I. Not saying it would definitely happen, of course.

Um... the Nationals are the closet franchise to Blacksburg, the second closet is Baltimore by 30 mins, but since that is in Maryland, the Nationals are considered the home team of the state of Virginia. Im sure most of the posters are aware where the Nations Capital is, and that Virgina is a Large state. The possibility of VT not being two blocks away from RFK probably hit the minds or even the most geographically challenged. But BTW...I think both the sox and cubs could wear and would wear a patch.

I think the only thing appropriate in this situation is a moment of silence. What happened today has nothing to do with the game of baseball. We should honor the memories of those lost in this tragedy, but not bring attention to the way in which they were lost.

Play Ball.

This is the first place I have heard anything at all about this. Had to go look up CNN site once I read the first post to figure out what was being talked about. Its certainly a tradgedy, but why cancel baseball because something horrible happened? Like someone else said people are dying every day in Iraq and thats terribly sad as well. We cant stop doing the things we enjoy in life every time something tragic happens. Life goes on.

Yeah, put me in with those who think the games should NOT be canceled. That just gives power to the nutcase who did it and the copycats who would get off on some idiot halting the country in their tracks.

Play the game, give a moment of silence for the victims.

I feel for the victims, their families, and the people close to them... However, I also feel strongly that to cancel the games would be the wrong course of action. Give the victims their moment of silence, but don't glorify the outrageous acts taken today by showing the effect they have on the whole country. That only emboldens likeminded individuals.

yes, we are all aware the Washington DC is NOT in Virginia

I think a moment of silence would be the most appropriate thing at this point.

At first, I thought suspending would be a good idea, but I do agree with the points that shutting things down only could encourgage copycats.

MOS, might be the best option now that I think about it.
