How does he rate as an announcer? Does he broadcast to Santo's level?

You could mean one of two things here. Is it that you hold Santo in high regard and you wonder if Hughes can keep up with him? Or that you hold Santo in low regard and wonder if Hughes stoops to his level?

I think he is a great listen. He plays well off Ron without taking advantage of any number of opportunities to make fun of him in a mean-spirited way.

Santo is just sort of there to moan and groan and yell and be the fan favorite.

Pat Hughes is regarded as one of the best in the business. He is an excellent announcer and plays off of Santo very well.

Pat Hughes is awesome!

He knows the game and is very descriptive in his play-by-play call. He also knows how to engage Ron Santo--which can be pretty tricky given how rough Santo can be at times (although I think he's great, too!). And he has a great sense of humor, which is a must when you take into account the team he's calling games for.

Pat is the best pbp guy i've ever heard (Note: I haven't heard a whole lot..but still, he's great)

Ron and Pat make such a great combo. Ron is a total homer, and pat plays off it so well while still being able to be a level-headed announcer. I love pat!

So you you guys like Ron? Personally, I wish he would retire because he doesn't too much to the table. I always thought people were getting tired or Ron on this board but maybe I was wrong.

How can you have an opinion of Santo without having knowledge of Hughes?

I've said it before and I'll say it again; Pat and Ron together are more than the sum of their parts.

Pat is the best radio pbp guy in the business and Ronny makes him better. They are the most entertaining radio combo doing baseball, even if the listener doesn't know exactly what is going on all the time.

Did you ever hear Harry when he was alive? Pat isn't as disoriented as Harry was some days, but you haven't heard a baseball game called unless you heard it called by Harry Caray and Steve Stone.

No, I didnt. At least, not that I remember. I watched Cubs games before 98...but it wasn't until 1998 and the HR Race that I really got into baseball. I wish I would have gotten to hear them.

the silky smoothe vocal stylings of pat hughes. the best pbp man around, imo.

and it's not that he simply caters to or plays off ronnie, it's that he somehow can read ronnie's mind and say what ron is trying to say but can't get the words out.

Even though I'm a Sox fan, I've heard a lot of Pat Hughes over the years and he really is an amazing talent in the booth. I've always favored John Rooney but Hughes is probably right there with him.

My son and I drive all over the country listening to CUBS games on the XM radio. As most of you know, XM broadcasts only the home team's announcers, so when the CUBS are on the road, we have to listen to the other team's guys. Some of them are good, others not so good...... but invariably it will happen a couple times a game that a crucial play takes place and the announcer will react to the play, but he'll never describe it. I look at my son and say "What just happened there ?", and all he can do is shrug his shoulders. This absolutely NEVER happens with Pat Hughes. He describes every singele play succintly and timely. He never leaves me wondering what the hell is going on. I salute Pat Hughes for the job he does. He ranks up there with the best of all time, and that's not idle praise coming from a guy that grew up listening to Jack Quinlan & Lou Boudreau.

The 7th inning stretch guests in the booth are a distraction, to be sure. Pat misses relating a few pitches while the guests are in the booth..... but when the ball in put in play, you will always hear about it.

I agree that Hughes is great at always keeping you informed.

This reminds me of a few times that I have seen a Sox game, and when the game is going bad for the them, Hawk Harrelson will litterally sulk, and not talk for minutes at a time....pretty pathetic if you ask me.

I really like Pat Hughes. I obviously dont hear a lot of different broadcast but I enjoy the Cubs more than the Cards, White Sox, Reds and Tigers. These are the ones I get around here.

Mike Krukow and Duane Kuiper do Giants games. I have been out there and they are pretty entertaining. Mike Krukow has 2 career homers and Kuiper had 1(off Steve Stone as Harry always liked to remind us). So that leads to some interesting stuff sometimes.

I think Pat has won national broadcaster of the year awards or something like that in the past with Milwaukee.

Does WGN have a mic on the field to pick up the ball hitting the bat or glove? How do they work that?

That is actually Pat simulating the sound himself.
