Still, Wuertz’s performance deserves a toast. Thanks to Bil Burke, our intrepid data jock, we were able to track down other instances in which this sequence was accomplished: reliever enters game with no outs and bases loaded, strikes out side. This trifecta has happened only 27 times since 1960, making it about four times rarer than a no-hitter (there have been 117 no-nos since 1960), or hitting for the cycle (124).

. . .

I think this could catch on if we can come up with a memorable name for the accomplishment. I would suggest calling it a Belinda, in honor of the only pitcher on our list to have accomplished the feat twice. Note that ex-Cub David Aardsma already has a Belinda to his credit this season. There are also rumors that John Rocker had a Belinda during the post-season, but we were unable to confirm that at press time.

As for Will Ohman.. Please call up Rocky Cherry.

Agreed. I would much rather give Cherry a chance than keep my fingers crossed every time Ohman or Eyre pitch.

Ohman definitely seems to be the odd man out. Cotts has, so far, looked pretty good. Lets hope he stays that way. I'd like to see Eyre traded off because of his cost more than anything else. Hell, sent Ohman, Eyre and Zambrano to the Yanks for ARod.

What is it about Weurtz with Dusty (and so far, Piniella) that you hardly ever see him get an appearance?

Is it that you can make it his name to say "WEURTZLESS"?

My only positive guess would be he's some sort of secret weapon, only to be used when we truely need him. But he needs to be in ballgames more.

It might be that Lou only remembers to spell it "Wuertz" every few attempts, and so he can't call the non-existant "Weurtz" out of the bullpen on the other days.

Wuertz has made 4 appearances so far this season, as has Cotts, Eyre & Ohman. Only Howry, with 6 appearances, has more, while Dempster & Guzman each have 3.

Then I guess my argument would be that Wuertz should get as many appearances as Bob Howry.

Wuertz

Howry

Followed by

========

Eyre

Guzman

Cherry

This should be the order of regularity.

Check back in a few days and see how things are going.

Reliever Scott Eyre was wheeled out of the Cub clubhouse on a stretcher and taken to the hospital via ambulance for intravenous fluids after Saturday's game. He was weak after complaining of flu-like symptoms and was expected back for Sunday's game

Uh, that sounds like a pretty scary situation. That would be pretty stupid to rush him back for a game where one day earlier, he was carried off on a stretcher.

Just give him a cheeseburger and he'll be fine.

Well, this is in good taste...

At least call it a cheeseborger

Wuertz is the best reliever on the team. He should be used as such.

agreed, and it's been like this for a while. too bad the management doesn't see it that way.
