Marmol earns his first win with a strong performance

Iowa starter Carlos Marmol struck out 10 batters over five and one-third shutout innings to lead the Cubs past the Round Rock Express, 8-0, Saturday night at Principal Park. Only one Express runner reached third base against Marmol, who improved to 1-0 on the year, and now ranks second in the Pacific Coast League with 16 strikeouts.

The Cubs jumped on Express starter Chad Reineke early with a first inning two-run double by Scott Moore. Mike Fontenot's RBI single in the second inning gave the Cubs a 3-0 lead. The Cubs blew the game open against a tiring Reineke in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, the Cubs loaded the bases on singles from Angel Pagan and Fontenot and a walk to Felix Pie. Down 0-2 in the count, Micah Hoffpauir drilled a grand slam on a hanging slider. Buck Coats added the final Cubs tally with an RBI single in the fourth. Hoffpauir improved his league leading RBI total to 17 with the grand slam. Angel Pagan and Fontenot each had a pair of hits for the Cubs, who improved to 5-4 on the year with the win.

Manager Jody Davis Gets His Tail Ejected

Jeanine Jiannetti

Cubs (4-5) dropped game two of their three game series to the Hammerheads (6-3) 10-5 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark Friday night.

Jupiter jumped off to an early lead when lead off batter Dante Brinkley homered to start the game. The Hammerheads J.T. Restko followed up with a solo shot for the first hit in the second inning.

Daytona’s Chris Amador (1-4) scored one run in the first inning, but the Cubs were unable to post another run until the sixth inning, then down 8-2.

In an unusual turn of events Amador was wrung up on a 2-2 count in the bottom of the eighth. Amador stepped out of the box without asking for time from the home plate umpire and was charged with a strike. Manager Jody Davis was ejected from the game after making sure his opinion heard on the call.

The Cubs first two batters in the bottom of the ninth, Robinson Chirinos (0-0) and Nate Spears (0-3) reached base and later scored but Daytona was unable to recover. The Cubs were out hit (15-7) as Jupiter tied St. Lucie for first place in the Florida State League in their win over the Daytona Cubs.

Peoria, IL- The Peoria Chiefs fell for the second straight night at home to the Burlington Bees by a score of 8-5 at O’Brien Field. The loss was the fourth straight for Peoria who falls to 3-4 on the young season.

Andrew Lopez opened the Chiefs half of the first inning with a triple to left center field and eventually scored the first run of the night on a wild pitch by Bees starter Everett Teaford.

Rafael Dolis walked the number nine hitting Matt Morizio to begin the third inning and that would lead to the first of two four run innings on the night for the Bees. The leadoff hitting Alvi Morel hit a two-run home run down the right field line making it 2-1. Chris McConnell scored on a double by Marc Maddox and Maddox later scored on a wild pitch by Dolis.

The Bees picked up their second four run inning of the night in the sixth inning after Jeremy Papelbon and Julio Castillo both struggled with control. After striking out Michael Thompson to start the inning, Papelbon and Castillo combined for four straight walks and two wild pitches that led to Burlington pushing out to an 8-3 advantage.

Dylan Johnston added an RBI single in the eighth inning that scored Yusuf Carter who reached on a single cutting the Burlington lead to 8-4. DJ Lewis hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth, his first of the season to cut the Burlington lead to 8-5.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Andrew Lopez (RF)- Andrew picked up the Chiefs first hit with a triple in the first inning and scored on a wild pitch. He later picked up an RBI double in the third inning and finished the game 2-for-4 with the one RBI.

Notes…Chiefs pitchers walked a season high 9…The four hurlers also threw a season high three wild pitches…

hooray for pie taking walks and for marmol not giving any.
The saying "it is more blessed to give than to receive" doesn't apply to walks.

Nice avatar and sig. :)

Yeah, thanks for the idea, maybe alot of people will follow. Seemed like a good idea as a way to show support. Im tired of trying to argue why he should be in the lineup, this way at least people will know my stance every time I post.
