Gallagher hits his pitch count and is being yanked

5.2 IPs, 0R/0ER, 4H, 6K/1BB, 8GO-4FO (I think)

That 6-1 K-BB is great, especially after his control problems at West Tenn last season.

That one BB *should* have been a called K on the 2-2 pitch. O:)

Great night for probably my favorite prospect, Brian Dopirak. 2/3 with a BB, keep it up Brian!

The one out that Dopirak made was the hardest ball he hit -- he was robbed of an XBH by a very nice OF running catch.

Iowa loses 6-2. Pie finished 2/4 with a strikeout and EPatt was 1/4 with a strikeout.

Peoria won 9-5. Wisconsin committed seven ( ) errors.

yikes

Heredia had a pretty rough game tonight too; 0-5 with 4Ks. 4 of Wisconsin's 7 errors were made by pitchers (one by each of the first 4 pitchers), 2 by different SS's, and 1 by their 3B. I don't know if it should be considered a good thing or a bad thing that the errors were committed by 7 different players.

Definitely a good start for Gallagher. If he keeps this up I don't think he'll be in AA all year.

Who gets the promotion first, Gallagher or THE DON!?

DaytonaCubs.com"]After a slow start in the 2006 season, the Daytona Cubs are off to blazing beginning in 2007 as they took the season opener from the Brevard Manatees 8-3. With most of his team advancing with him from Peoria, Manager Jody Davis can mark his first win in Daytona on the board.

In the top of the first, Nate Spears got on with a walk and advanced to third on a single from Tyler Colvin. Spears then scored the first official run on a balk by Derek Miller.

Colvin ripped a single to rightfield for the Cubs first hit of the season. Testing his speed early, Davis gave Colvin the green light on the base paths. Colvin stole second base, then scored on a single off the bat of Ryan Norwood. Colvin went two-for-three on the night.

Matt Matulia put up some impressive numbers. Matulia drove in three runs on two hits, including a double that scored Jake Muyco to put the Cubs up 3-2 in the seventh. Mitch Atkins went six strong innings on the mound for Daytona, allowing only four hits and two earned runs. One of which was a homerun by Brevard shortstop, Chris Errecart in the bottom of the third.

The eighth inning is when the Cubs really turned on the gas, scoring four runs on four hits. Matulia drove in his second and third runs of the night capping off the inning with the Cubs leading 7-2. In the ninth, Chris Amador doubled, advanced on a passed ball and score on a throwing error to bring Daytona to their first victory.

Tomorrow brings another promising night as Notre Dame stand out and Cubs prospect Jeff Samardzija takes mound in Brevard at 7p.m.

Sean.

I just hope they don't rush him too much. I'd like to see him stay in AA until around mid-season, and finish the year at AAA. A September callup is possible I guess, but I'd rather see him rest up a little bit and then play some winter ball instead.

First, the local newspapers:

Center fielder Felix Pie, the five-tool player who is on the fast track to the Chicago Cubs, went 2-for-4 while hitting third in the lineup - both infield singles, one of which helped Iowa keep the score close early.

The Peoria Journal-Star"]The Timber Rattlers were able to hit Chiefs starter Billy Muldowney -- when they were able to make contact. The right-hander struck out nine, but allowed eight hits and four runs in picking up the win.

"We expected a good game from him and he was up to the task," Sandberg said. "He left a few balls up that he was disappointed in, but they earned what they got."

The seven-run first inning runs helped Muldowney, who had to go back to the bullpen to warm up again during the inning.

"I was just trying to do the best I could to stay warm," Muldowney said. "Seven runs in the first will help your body stay warm."

Marco Carillo pitched three innings in relief for the Chiefs and allowed just one run and struck out five. Jeremy Papelbon pitched a perfect ninth with two strikeouts to seal the win for the Chiefs.

"You win with guys who throw strikes and that's what we wanted," Sandberg said. "They went out there and challenged the hitters, challenged the strike zone."

Matt Camp (2B) & Billy Muldowney (RHP) – Camp set the tone for the entire game when he walked in the first and moved to third on an error and scored. He reached base in all five plate appearances and finishes 2-for-4 with a stolen base, run scored and RBI. Muldowney mowed down the Rattlers with a career high nine strikeouts. He went five innings and kept Wisconsin from getting back in the game.

Hello and sorry for the late post but the family went out with Sean last night after the game. I thought the "Smokies" played really well last night and took advantage of situations that they created.... I thought the team pitched great except for some anxious moments in the 9th inning. I thought Sean did a great job of changing speeds and has grown more confident in throwing his CH. His velocity last night was clocked at 93 for his FB with his CH at around 80/84 and his CB from 65/74. The loopy one is the much slower one but with both he keeps hitters guessing. I thought Layden along with Piggy did an outstanding job of continuing this steady stream of off-speed pitches.

I was a little concerned upon seeing the initial line-up which had Fox and Spearman in the OF. Jake had a little trouble with a line drive that was hit right at him and this team is pretty solid in the infield. This was my first time seeing Robinson behind the dish and thought he did a great job handling all the pitchers.

Offensively it was tough being the first game but thought they made the most of opportunites they created. C-Walk with his infield hit that led to an error which got him to 2nd and then the rest of the team came thru. I thought Craig and Dop and Cates swung the bat really well and that ball that Dop hit in the 2nd inning was crushed but the breeze was blowing in and held it up. It was tough to watch Jake struggle at the plate after watching him in Big Lg Camp crush the ball and all he saw was a steady diet of off-speed pitches.

Great to watch the team win their 1st game as a "CUBS" affiliate and can't wait for tonights game as this will be my first look at the "Don" and will post hopefully after the game.....

Sean and the Don at the top of that rotation gives Tennesee a formidable 1-2 punch!

I'd love for all three to be there May 17-21 when they visit Mississippi.
