From AZ Phil of the Cub Reporter:

He [Felix Pie] has really become a good base-stealer since working with Bob Dernier at Iowa last Summer (11 SB in his last 13 attempts at Iowa in ‘06, then three SB in three attempts in the Dominican Winter League, and now two-for-two so far in 2007 ST with the Cubs).

I'm glad to see this progress in Pie's game.

Thanks Bob! If he was in college he'd be a senior right now, I like the fact that he has had some time in AAA instead.

Here's hoping Murton and Pie stick together throughout the length of Soriano's contract.

8 years with the same outfield.

That probably never happened before free agency, let alone after. But, I suppose it could happen.

At best I'm thinkin, 3-4 years. Murton is the type of guy you want to keep. Affordable and gives you good #'s. However I just see the Cubs org as the type that would trade him away, before a "jones" type FA which they'd have to pay $5-$10 mil. Hopefully that changes with Mcdunnough.

Pie's "improvement" as a base-stealer seems to involve giving up the practice. He doesn't try to steal much anymore. Picking your spots and stealing only against really bad catchers or really obvious, bad-delivery pitchers is smarter than trying to run and getting gunned a lot.

But his improvement seems to simply be being really selective, and only stealing a little bit when he's got a good shot

Except you can't name the last time that the Cubs traded a young up and comer that played the first few years of his contract with the team after coming up with them.

So, really, you don't have much a basis for the comment.

Which, if you ask me, is a very, very good thing. Selectivity is one of the most important aspects (if not the most important aspect) of stealing bases, just as it is in hitting.
