I can't understand why the hell some of you are comparing to how his velocity progressed last season. In case I needed to remind you, Prior following the path he took last season wasn't exactly useful.

because his velocity wasn't the problem last season. nor will it be this season.

people can calm down. if he's hurt, it probably won't show in his velocity, it will show when he gets lit up in every single game because his pitches aren't moving.

Let Prior get some more innings on that arm and then you will see the increase in velocity. Im not worried about Prior being at 89mph in his first start.

If there is something to be worried about, it would be the health of Bob Howry and those 163 games he has pitched in the past 2 seasons.

A healthy and effective Prior is a lot more valuable than a healthy and effective Howry.

There is no question about that, but Howry is probably the most valuable bullpen arm the Cubs have besides a healthy and effective Wood. Let's just hope they're both able to contribute for the Cubs in 07.

Just one other note everyone is missing. Prior reportedly topped out at 89. That doesn't mean he wasn't still sitting at 83-85 for the most part. I'm not getting too worked up yet regardless, but Sullivan's report that he topped out at 89 shouldn't be taken as if it were refuting the claims he was working at 83-85. Topping out just means the highest he hit on the radar. Plus, they may have had a slow gun, I don't know.

If they did, Woody was nearing 100.

I have 2 words that make me feel better....Juan Guzman.

:?:

I don't get it.

If Prior is struggling to make it back I like having a guy like Juan Guzman being ready to take his place.

I think and hope he meant Angel...

I think Will Carroll had a report a while back that his sources said Prior was kind of holding back on his pitches and not really airing it out. That could explain the lower velocity yesterday. I think Carroll even speculated that Prior might be a little gun-shy given his recent injuries and that his taking things uber-cautiously.

(I can't find the link 'cause I don't have BP internet subscription anymore.)

I agree...it's still way to early to speculate these things. I'm sure Prior has a plan and he's sticking to it.

I agree! From what I've heard is that Mark has a regiment that he goes by and he has recently seen Tom House so I assume he's got a day by day that he's doing to gradually work himself back by Opening Day.

I'm still sticking to my thoughts on him not being ready until June but I'm hoping I'm wrong. Again these are my feelings but I think that Prior needs more mental toughness when he is struggling pitching wise.

June? I can't see that at all. If he's not ready by June, he's not going to pitch in 2007...

Not necessarily. This is of course just my thinking but if Prior isn't 100% he'll go the on 60 day. This gives the Cubs more options on the kids and a longer chance to look at them. By the time Prior comes back the Cubs can fully evaluate the young pitcher(s) by then and make a solid decision on what to do by the trade deadline. Plus as you said, it's possible if he isn't ready by June he may not be ready at all so the Cubs can make a move according to that information.

Angel?

Whoops....Freudian slip!

Angel Guzman. Yes....Angel, that's the man.

Ahh, too early in the morning for me. I should've realized that. Here I was Googling Juan Guzman to see if there were any stories of him recovering lost velocity or something.

For me too I guess! Googling Juan Guzman should have scared the heck out of you as he's the guy the Cubs signed when they let Maddux go as you probably already know.

If there is a delay in Prior's return it opens the door for Mr. Guzman.

Wrong Guzman again. You're thinking of Jose Guzman:
