I don't think the Cubs should be looking at Santana. He's an FA after 2008, and 2009 is the year we have a bad money crunch. We have $72M committed to 6 players in 2009, and that's before Z signs. If you add in Santana it would become difficult to even put a whole baseball team on the field for less than $140M. 2010 isn't good either with Z on the payroll. To get Santana the great bulk of the money would have to be backloaded unto 2011 and later. Then you'd have Fonz, Aramis and Santana sucking up about $55M in 2011. Will Aramis even be still be a viable NL player in 2011? How good will Fonz still be?

"I'm happy the way things have gone in Minnesota... but if I do opt for free agency, my agent will be the one in charge... … but after that, whatever has to happen will happen."

I guess we know what motivates Santana. I just lost a lot of respect for him. That quote there represents alot of things that are wrong with professional sports today.

I guess we know that what motivates Santana is the same thing that motivates about 95% of people.

Fixed.

Why would you lose respect for Santana over this? He's not running a charity.

Don't forget the Sox will be out from under the heavy contracts (over the next 2 years) of:

Lowell (this year)

Schilling (this yaer, maybe next)

Wakefield (almost 5 mil..could retire at any time)

Manny (after 08)

Varitek (after 08)

They're gonna have soem serious money to throw around after the 2008 season.

Ortiz still needs his big payday. Papelbon won't be cheap to keep.

My guess is Miguel Cabrera ends up in Boston.

Ortiz has an 8 figure contract through 2011 if Boston wants the team option. Papelbon won't even be arbitration eligible for the first time until after 2008.

As you say, that's what is wrong with pro sports. That includes Pryor and the rest of them.

yep because everyone i know would take a job for 10 bucks a hour instead of the 30 bucks a hour to do the exact same thing that someone else offered. Especially in Santana's position of being the best pitcher in baseball.

I love it when people relate their everyday jobs to baseball careers because they're so similar.

most can relate on the scale i used and not the difference between the 125 million Zito got and the 180 Santana will probably get

I would assume that the most talented person on the planet is going to make tens of millions of dollars per year in any entertainment-drive/large money industry. Johan Santana is no different.

QFT

Jim ought to start clearing the decks now to make a run at him.

Just kidding, but if he does hit the mkt I would hope Jim would make a serious run at Johan.

As would any Cubs fan. In reality, what do we see Santana making on the open market? Is 8 years 140-150 million really out of the question?

You completely missed his point. It was not about money, it was about his negotiation style. He made a blatant threat.

This is also the Twins though. I would not consider it a threat, he just put them on notice.

A threat about what would happen AFTER he filed for free agency. It has nothing to do with his negotiations with the Twins for an extension.

What kind of idiot would file for free agency and then not let his agent take control? I know Sheffield did it, but I would guess that somewhere around almost 99.9% of all baseball players would get their asses handed to them in a negotiating room.

What a stupid thing to chastise a player for.
