Pitcher Michael Wuertz has a mild strain in his right shoulder, will rest this weekend and resume throwing on Monday. Wuertz was examined Wednesday. Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild said the right-handed reliever has experienced similiar discomfort in past springs.

Even if Wuertz goes down I think Novoa still winds up in Iowa.

Don't forget Guzman or one of the many young kids. This would be a good way of easing guzman into the rotation. Let him releif pitch for awhile, see how he does.

I disagree.

Gooz needs to log innings, not just get a few ML innings. His stuff will translate to the major leagues. It's just too good not to. He needs to show he can handle the workload of a starting pitcher (last year was the first step). You don't waste a pitcher with 3+ above average pitches in the pen, especially when you have a pen loaded with arms as the Cubs 'pen is.

He needs to be starting. I don't mind him going to the pen if he gets regular innings and translates to him becoming a starter soon. But I don't think he'll be afforded that opportunity if he makes the team as a reliever.

I don't think he'll get enough innings as a reliever no matter what, especially with the amount of quality arms down there now and a pretty solid rotation that can consistently get into the 6th inning. Just a reminder, here are Guzman's IP starting with 2000

If you have plans to jump him into the major league rotation anytime soon, and at age 25, it should be pretty soon, he is going to have to start being able to throw more innings, or he is going to have a rough first full season starting.

if he begins the season in the pen, i dont know what scenario would have to happen to let him get back to starting. i really dont know what is needed to "stretch out" a reliever so they can handle 6 innings at a time like a starter. if he's already starting in iowa, it only takes an injury or marquis suckitude to bring him back to the bigs.

Ok, well my other point is there are alot of other guys avaialbe that should be above Novoa. Novoa should just be traded for a prospect at this point.

I'm Wuertz's biggest fan, but after hearing this isn't a new thing for him I'm not really worried about him. I think he's in for a big year in '07.

I was thinking the same thing. Wuertz has quickly become one of my favorite relievers. I give you most of that credit for constantly preaching about him, haha.
