I found an interesting Floyd interview with, reforming Cubs' bashers, Salisbury & Rosenbloom on ESPN AM1000. The interview begins at the 14:49 mark and includes Cliff saying he's under the impression that he'll play in "125-130 games." Obviously, that's a surprise but I don't know if it was bravado or a mandate... He also went on to mention that things could change if someone (Jones) is moved. S&R also covered the obligatory "Aramis is lazy" topic.

They plan to make Floyd a regular contributor of the show.

If Murton gets less than 300 ABs, I will one unhappy camper. Unless he performs poorly, which I hope he doesn't.

Hmmm-well, if he means starts, then I think that is high-but I can easily see him getting into 125-130 games. If they divide the starts evenly, each one of the 3 outfielders at the corners will have 108 starts (probably closer to 100-105 each because Ward will get some time out there in the corners, and even lower than that if they go with some sort of other platoon option). That means Floyd is pinch-hitting in about 1/3-1/2 of the games he's on the bench, which is actually probably a little low.

Floyd is talking like Baker is the manager....Piniella will begin with performance and then if Murton actually competes and shows he has the ability to start Floyd will end up traded with Jones.

I should have been more specific in my description. He actually says he expects that time to be in LF.

You don't value a deep bench?

If Floyd puts up a .900 OPS in LF as he has many times in his career, I won't complain too loudly if he starts 125 or more ballgames. If he's starting every day with an OPS anywhere under .850, I won't be real happy because at that rate, it's not worth taking ABs away from Murton. I think a lot of Murton's ABs will come in RF as Jones, not Floyd, is the guy that really needs to sit against lefties. There are 322 starts in the outfield. I can see Floyd getting around 100, almost all in left, with Murton getting about 120 evenly split between left and right, and Jones getting about 100 starts as well. It all depends on Piniella and how he balances performance vs. keeping his players happy, and of course, who actually is performing to begin with.

Yeah, he should easily get to 125-130 games this year. He's done it exactly 3 times since 1998, so it should be very easy.

I'm almost sick of this subject... lol.

And I don't think it'll be too difficult for Floyd to see action in 120+ games if he's used "sparingly." If he stays healthy, he's a heck of a bat coming off the bench and used in the right situations.

it'll be interesting how much RF time floyd and murton get in ST

I think that it's possible that Murton might go to RF and Floyd will stay at LF against leftys if Floyd continues to hit well against them.

I just don't have a lot of faith in Floyd remaining healthy but if he does and is productive it's a win-win situation for the Cubs. As I said for the pitchers, I want Lou to have hard decisions because guys are doing well a heck of a lot more than the other way around.

Maybe I'm eisegeting, but I'm getting the idea that if Soriano can handle CF, Jones becomes the 4th.

He'd be a heck of a 4th guy but I'd have to assume he'd also be an expensive and unhappy one too.

I doubt that. The Cubs don't really have a RF. Jones is the most qualified to play there.

I'm much much much rather have Murton in RF than Jones. After seeing him play last year, I certainly wouldn't say Jones is qualified to play RF.

After seeing both of them play there, Jones is a much better fielder at getting to balls and making plays (along with the stronger arm, if he would ever show it). Murton has the much more accurate arm. I'm all for putting Murton in RF part of the time (and I think Murton is an average defender in LF, which is higher than most people think)-but if our defensive outfield on a regular basis is Floyd-Soriano-Murton, there's going to be plenty of gap shots that will be hit against them.

Against a right-handed Ace I think you get Floyd-Soriano-Jones but thats less than 30 starts a year.

The other 130+ games I think Murton starts in RF more than LF and Floyd gets more start than Jones.

Again all assuming Soriano doesn't embarrass himself in CF and Murton doesn't embarrass himself in RF.

One week into spring training and Cliff Floyd is already injured. I think Murton is going to get a majority of the playing time in LF by default.

Piniella's only big surprise on the eve of the Cactus League opener was the announcement that Cliff Floyd will sit out at least the first seven games to give his left Achilles' tendon more time to heal after surgery last October.

It's difficult to be more precise because trainer Mark O'Neil is no longer allowed to update the media on player injuries, as per the new collective bargaining agreement between owners and the players' association.

Floyd has been crushing the ball, but if he can't run, he can't play—an occupational hazard in the National League.

Piniella said he's not worried that Floyd won't be ready for the start of the season.

He is not "already injured" he is coming off surgery in October and the staff wants to give him an additional week.

No need to create a story that isn't true man!

So being hurt and unable to play is not considered "being injured"? Sorry, you can phrase it in a way that pleases you. The fact is that Floyd is going to miss at least the first week of games due to physical ailments and apparently is unable to run. Considering Floyd's past I would say that is not a good thing.

Edit: Cubs.com has a story saying that Floyd is being held back by the coaches and doesn't have any pain. Could be the case of Sullivan making it sound worse than it is. Guess we will have to wait and see.

Just as likely Muskat is making it sound better than it is.
