I know this isn't a big deal to many people, but it is to me. Bruce Miles confirmed that Jason Marquis will, in fact, wear number 21 this season. It really pisses me off that Marquis, a former Cardinal no less, has the audacity to walk into Chicago and request to wear the same number that Sammy Sosa wore during his time here. It's a pretty stupid decision by him too. He was basically worthless last year as a baseball player, so Cubs fans aren't too happy with his signing at all. And now he accentuates it by wearing the same number that a future hall of famer wore here? Way to make Cubs fans like you even less, Jason! Moron.

I don't mind... when Sammy's jersey is retired, I will. Marquis is no longer a Card, he is a Cub. Sammy is no longer a Cub, he is a Ranger.

I was thinking this might actually speed up the healing process between Sammy and the Cubs-Sammy fans should actually like this move IMO. I have no problem with it either-the club gave him all the numbers available to wear, and he should be able to wear anything that the club makes available to him.

The team didn't have to issue it. There's as much blame on the organization in this matter as there is on Marquis.

I don't think this is a issue at all. But Marquis was already going to be on the hot seat with the fans. For him this was not a smart decision. Can we say Jaque Jones from last year.

First of all, IMO you should get the "Marquis is a cardinal" talk out of your system before spring training starts, because Jason Marquis - for better or worse - is now a Chicago Cub.

The way I see it, as others have said, Jason was given a list to choose from. He chose the one he wanted. That seems like enough.

Oh no, Marquis is wearing 21. I'd better boo him profusely the first time I see him. Instead of rooting for him to do well. Yeah, that should work. .

Honestly, if you guys want the Cubs to go far, you should support each and every Cub.

Does a parent have to support all of their childrens' decisions? No.

Just because posters disagree with this decision does not mean they do not want him to do well.

yeah, all those posts of "i hope jason marquis does horrible and makes us lose a lot of games" are really pissing me off too.

well the worse he does the quicker he's gone.

Maybe, but if he does well he won't need to be gone-he's certainly proven before that he can do well, just as he's proven he can do horribly. Instead of automatically trying to get rid of him, why not hope he can pitch well first?

I'm just saying, don't go out and boo him his first day just because he is wearing no. 21. I don't want to see a stadium full of 10-20 thousand booing because of the # he is wearing.

That's how I feel. I want Jason to do well like he has done a few times in the past. Would you honestly be unhappy if this guy put up an ERA in the low 4's and went out there every 5th day? That's what I'm rooting for. And I don't care what # he is wearing. He's a Cub now, and I want the BEST of jason marquis, not the worst. And a good way to do that is to try to show your support to him as a cubs fan. By cheering for him when he does well. Not worrying about a # he is wearing.

I dont think there's much hope, call me negative but it's certainly a belief that can be backed up statistically.

Dont get me wrong I have nothing against Jason Marquis and would love to see him produce for us, I just don't think there's a realistic chance of it happening.

I blame the Cubs more than Marquis. 21 is Marquis's number, and he's been wearing it a while. It was the Cubs' job if they so chose to tell him not to wear it.

This organization's refusal to recognize Sammy Sosa's contributions since October 2004 happened is absolutely nauseating to me.

No one is saying they're not going to support him. What I am saying is that it's pretty crappy of him to select that number. Baseball is all about the past and the greats that have played before the current players. Marquis is showing a complete disregard for that. And again, he really could have made a positive impact in some fans minds (mine included) had he declined to take number 21. I wish him the best and obviously hope he does well for the Cubs. But I'm not happy that he's a Chicago Cub.

And besides, he wore number 38 in Atlanta, so it's not like he's worn number 21 his whole life or anything like that.

Time will heal. Sammy brought a lot of things on himself with his petulant and selfish behavior.

Albert Pujols is petulant and selfish in many ways too, but I can't see STL ever allowing #5 to be issued again once he leaves the team, even if he leaves a meaningless game on the last day of the year early.
