Wood (partial tear/rotator cuff) was throwing about 50 pitches off a mound in late January.

interesting. Is he stretching out to start? I know they've pinned him for the bullpen, but throwing that many pitches this early says rotation to me.

Why, I've seen him throw that many in 2 innings!

That's normal for even relievers to throw a lot of pitches warming up. I hope he didn't feel any pain or discomfort during or after.

But in January?

Certainly. You have to build up the whole body for the season and throwing 50 is a good start. What I would like to see is how well he throws the next couple of times out because it's usually the recovery time that gets you.

I have nothing to add except...

KERRY WOOD: SUPER CLOSER.

Trademark pending.

Just the fact that he is throwing a significant number of pitches off the mound in January is good news. Over the last couple of years he reached this point in May/June it seems.

50 Pitches this time of year is right on track going into spring training. If the Cubs are like the two other organizations that I have seen the off season conditioning programs for pitchers, everyone is sitting at 50 to 60 pitches off a mound.

Add in that Wood is rehabbing, and 50 is promising. The rub comes in that not all bullpen sessions are the same. If Wood is throwing at 50% for those 50, it isnt the same as 80%. Muchl ess if they have him airing it out for the last 15 to 20 pitches of the session.

I'm more interested in where Marky Mark is at right now...

I'd start by questioning the Funky Bunch...in retrospect, what a funny name for a band.

If Kerry Wood can throw 50 pitches with no pain on successive days, there is zero chance he is not the team closer by late May. I mean, let's get serious here. We have seen the best Ryan Dempster can be. We have seen the best Kerry Wood can be. Is there even a remote question who you should turn over the game to?

Dempster will be one very expensive $5MM middle reliever, that is true, but who cares for a team that can spend $7MM on a Jason Marquis. Keep Kerry healthy and give him the job. I predict Gagne-esque success for Kid K as a closer.

He needs a theme song. 8-)

I agree completely with don_k ... and the theme song won't matter because a deafening crowd will drown it out.

Do we know he was actually throwing full-speed rather than just tossing them in from the mound to lossen the ligaments?

It would be a different story if we knew he was throwing his full repertoire and going more or less full steam.

That's a good point. I can throw 50 pitches off of a mound and I'm 59 years old with a bad shoulder and bad knees, so it is important to know what kind of pitches he's making.

Im not sure how long Kerry has been throwing off the mound, but if this was not the first time doing so this off-season, I would imagine he was throwing anywhere between 50-75%.

I don't know how long he's been throwing to throw the 50 but it's nice to hear that he is. I think he would be a very dominate closer if he is able to do it and having Dempster and the rest to close when Wood can't is just a bonus. If I remember correctly Lou did a nice job of rotating his closers when he needed to when he won with the Reds. I really think how Lou uses this pen is going to be a big factor in the Cubs being able to make the playoffs and how they do from there.

Dominant. Dominate is a verb. Sorry

It is definitely wonderful to hear that Woody is throwing off a mound already. I hope he is the primary closer.

Ya, I seem to have a problem with that. Thanks.
