Who do you drop if Wood comes off the DL early (before opening day) and you think Prior will be healthy?

I'd deal (in order of preference): Eyre, Dempster, Ohman or Cotts to make room for Wood. But I think Hendry would option Wuertz to Iowa. Of course either scenario assumes Miller is not also DL'd.

Guzman impressing in ST and Wood, Miller & Prior all being healthy would defintely make things interesting.

A good interesting and something I hope happens.

I see you sent down Cedeno. Does Izturis play SS for 162 games or do you think Theriot can fill in? This position really worries me.

I think Cedeno making the 25-man is not out of the question - and fine with me if he replaces Pagan. I'd just prefer to see him have some success at Iowa- more incentive for the Cubs to forego Izturis' '08 option, or at least create some trade value for Cedeno.

My preference would be:

Three full time players (Lee, Soriano, Ramirez)

Six 3/4 time players (Izturis/Jones/Barrett/DeRosa/Murton/Theriot)

Izturis/Theriot SS

Jones/DeRosa RF

Murton/Floyd LF (not something I'd choose, but inevitable if Floyd is signed IMO)

DeRosa/Theriot 2B

Barrett/Blanco C

I think the DeRosa/Jones platoon is a real possibility, but frankly I'd be surprised to see Theriot getting a quarter of the starts at SS.

You lose Pagan and who backs up CF? Jones?

Theriot at SS = Bad.

162 games of Izturis = Really bad.

No matter what, we're screwed at SS this year.

I thought Theriot was pretty good defensively at SS.

The best chance we have to be league average of better at SS is Cedeno. I'm not trying to say it is much of a chance, but there you go.

I'm not convinced our best chance isn't Trammell.

So does the signing of Floyd round out the OF or does Hendry go after a supersub that plays the middle infield and CF?

This also takes away a lot of AB's from Ward and possibly Murton.

Has Floyd ever played first?

Ward ever played 3rd?

I think the roster is set. The only reason I could see them making another move would be if Soriano shows in spring that he cannot handle CF.

Looking at the starting line-up, we have:

C Barrett

1b Lee

2b Derosa

SS Izturis

3b Ramirez

LF Murton

CF Soriano

RF Jones

On the bench we have:

Theriot 2b/SS/CF

Pagan LF/RF/CF

Blanco C

Ward RF/LF/1b

Floyd RF/LF/1b

While no one there can play 3b all that well, Derosa is, in my opinion, the one who will give Ramirez any rest he needs on a day to day basis. If he's put on a DL stay, Moore will be called up.

Pie is really going to have to impress this spring to make the team, and that's a good plan. There may be another acquisition or if Pie looks really good, Jones could be dealt.

I think that analysis is dead on Vance. Lets just hope the ABs stay as promised for Matty.

I was just thinking about Cotts....didn't Hendry say something about giving him a shot at being a starter?

He mentioned that when they got him. I'm thinking that was before they signed Lilly and Marquis though, no?

Regardless, there's really no need for three lefties in the BP. I still think one of them is a strong cadidate to get traded, along with Jones.

Yes it was before those signings but there is still an open 5th spot on the starter depth chart.

I suppose there is. I guess Zambrano, Hill, Lilly and Marquis are pretty much penciled in right now with Prior, Miller, Guzman, Marshall, Cotts, etc. all being candidates to take the fifth spot (or possibly bump Marquis if more than one really impresses).

Man I hope Prior is ready. That rotation could be pretty awful with out him.

It certainly looks better than last year to me -- barring injuries of course.

And I must admit, I've got no line on how good this team will be in the context of the NL, because it just seems like the entire league is in such flux right now. We're coming off a year where a real marginal ballclub won the WS, everyone's jostling to get that little edge up, nobody knows what kind of record the top teams will put up. There's really very little frame of reference to judge how far this Cub team can go.

At the Convention, Hendry mentioned on multiple occasions that he had given Lou eight guys for the five spots. Based on the names he'd mention, those eight guys appear to be the following: Zambrano, Hill, Lilly, Marquis, Prior, Miller, Marshall, and Guzman. I guess Cotts might be there in the place of Guzman or Marshall.

The only time I recall Cotts being mentioned is in regards to the pen.

On a related notes, based on what I heard from Flieta, Hendry, and others, it appears Marmol's future will be in the pen.

I can't find it in my notes, but I think it was in the Down on the Farm session where Flieta touted Marmol has having a future as a great 8th or 9th inning arm.

He has alot to work on if he wants to become that dominate 8th or 9th inning pitcher.

Definitely the better place for him IMO. Plus fastball, and a good breaking pitch can get you a loooong ways as an 8th inning setup man.

And it could be pretty great with him. Amazing what a difference one guy could make.
