When Murton is sitting on the bench opening day becasue the Cubs are facing a "tough" righty that Flloyd is 13 for 31 against let me say, I told you so.

Can someone say I told you so again when Floyd goes 2 for 3 with a double? Even in this worst case scenario, Floyd's not a scrub.

No, just a broken down has been.

Well, he was playing with pain all last season and he's had this injury before on the other leg. He came back from it just fine then.

He's not a has been. It's not like he just inexlicably started going downhill. Injuries were the reason, not ability.

He's not Sosa.

I think the told you so's will have to wait no matter what.

If it's June and Murton isn't getting 75% of the PA, then some people can chirp. But if Floyd is really productive it'll be easier to swallow.

Muskat says Murton will likely platoon in LF and be a bench option.

*&%$!!!

Oh well, Murt will just have to outplay his geriatric wrinkled hiney. Lou isn't Dusty. Performance actually matters.

Don't worry what Muskat has to say, she is worthless!

can we stop calling her Muskat? jesus.

Is it really that big of deal?

No, but that's because it really reflects more upon the childishness of the person calling names than it does upon Carrie.

I have no problem with refraining from calling her Muskat, I just find it hard to believe that it is a bigger deal than openly taking the Lords name in vain.

Call me childish, that is cool, but to continue to let people use language on this board that IS OFFENSIVE and not call them out is a pathetic lack of control in my opinion!

Just my humble opinion, but my sense is that the Lord would view calling another human being "worthless" as being much worse than taking his name in vain.

Somehow I have a feeling that if someone called Niefi worthless, there would not be an uproar.

Niefi = Worthless player

Muskat = Worthless reporter

From a board that allows nicknames like "Slappy", and "Jock Strap".....it is hard to believe that people have such a big problem with "Muskat". Seems like some people are being a little oversensitive.

She's just doing her job. She works for MLB. If you expepect cutting edge commentary and scoups from someone whose job it is to be a spokes person, I don't know what to tell you.

And Niefi is just doing his job when the coach bats him leadoff and he has another horrible game..... And Slappy was just doing his job, when Hendry traded too much for him and overvalued him....And Jaque Jones was just doing his job, when Hendry signed him last year.

I'm confused as to why she deservers so much sympathy.

I just thought it was hilarious that a poster complained about "Muskat" but immediately followed it up with taking the Lord's name in vain. You just can't make that stuff up.

it's not that hilarious.

seriously, it's what 3rd graders do, changing someone's name to make fun of them. it's not offensive, but it's really stupid and childish.

It was hilarious.

The absolute hypocracy of it is astounding. I'm not offended, but there would be a good many human beings who would be by your remark. On the other hand, Carrie Muskat doesn't have that many followers. At least, the Carrie cult seems to be very low key, so who really knows.

"All I said was that piece of Hallibut was good enough for Jehova"

"Stop it, you're only making it worse for yourself"

"Worse? How could I be making it worse?

"jehova, jehova, jehova, jehova!"

Now that is funny!

Age plays a part. And those injuries, combined with his age, don't make for a good bet that he'll be healthy and productive this year.

i don't think you know what hypocricy means. i didn't alter jesus's name to make fun of him. i used it as a practically universally accepted way of expressing disbelief/anger. sorry if it offended people, it wasn't the intention.

I think there's a significant difference between calling her Muskat, and bitching about those players. I don't think people have sympathy for the woman. And I think she's terrible at what she does and is a poor excuse for a journalist.

Calling Pierre slappy refers to how he does his job. Calling Jacque jock strap is just as childish as calling Muskat Muskat. Now, if you were to call her Mustnotreadthisdrivelkat, that would be about how she does her job.

I agree 100%. And I hope that you defended them just as vigorously. Generally, on a sports message board, it is not uncommon to see people give players, writers, GM's, etc. dumb nicknames.

Obviously bigger than taking the Lord's name in vain...

Pretty sad in my opinion.

I would never type Muskat again if I didn't have to see the Lord's on this board again.

I'm not sure I can ever stop talking about Kent.

Just listened to Floyd's conference call and he sounds genuinely interested in being whatever the team needs, whether it's getting his 500 PA, platooning, being a PH or bench guy - whatever it takes to win.

Did he actually say he's ok with the PH'ing/bench guy stuff?

Seriously, this jesus stuff is so annoying. I can't even say "[expletive]" at the bar without someone getting in my face about it. Hello, we're at the bar getting drunk, trying to find a girl to have sex with, how can you be upset about "taking the lords name in vain" when we're breaking a million bible rules at the same time?

In the past I've received multiple pms from Cheesehead calling me a bitch, you think god was cool with that?

I'm just amazed (and maybe even a little dismayed :)) because I figured with the Bears in the Super Bowl I wouldn't even think about baseball until Feb 5th. But, here I am, mulling over whether I want to plan a trip out to Arizona or not.

LOL, I'm hopeless. The Trib may as well have my checking account routing number.

It's a sickness. I'm in full-on craving baseball mode right now. I thought the Bears might keep the baseball cravings down some, but it's not really helping.

I know my cravings will return, but they have not. The combination of the Bears in the Super Bowl and the Cubs hitting rock bottom last year has cooled my spring fever a bit. By Feb 6 however, I expect to be in full Cubs anticipation mode.

(back after log-in trouble), but I'm trying to quit smoking here man. You guys make me want a cigerette. :D Talking about "cravings", sheesh. :P

I feel the same way. After the debacle that was the 2006 season, and with the Bears doing so well, I haven't been craving all things Cubs like I have in the past. I'm excited for the season to start, but I haven't been obsessed about what the Cubs are doing like years before.

I'm the opposite right now. Starting in (around) october 2005 (the offseason), I've been a die-hard cubs fan. (look at my register date). . Before then I was always a cubs fan, but I didn't even watch every game. Well in 2005 that was different. And I've been full on die-hard ever since. I just can't get enough cubs!! And ofcourse I am VERY happy with the way the team looks now. Best it has been since 2004!!

I'm usually one to look for the positive side of things, but I can't help but notice this... the vesting option is based on the number of plate appearances. With that in mind, it's hard to think why a player would agree to a contract like that if he wasn't promised that he'd have the opportunity to get that many plate appearances.

I like Floyd off the bench. I don't like him as an everyday player though. I wonder what Hendry and Piniella really have planned for him.

Well, relievers often sign deals that offer incentives for "finishing games" as a way of being compensated if they were thrust into the closer's role. I'm guessing this could just be a way for Floyd to profit if, for some reason, he becomes a starter.

From what I recall, yes. The conference call is on Cubs.com if you want to listen to it. I think it was towards the end.

It's not so much Spring Training.. because that doesn't always reflect what you will do during the regular season. 162 > 30ish. But if he generally hits better than Jones, I'll take him over Jones. I dunno if the same thing goes for performing better than Murton, but its not my decision.

2) If Jesus asks me to start enforcing the 2nd/3rd commandment here, you can bet that I'll take him seriously at that time.

I guess since Muskat has not asked you to remove derogatory posts about her we can continue calling her Muskat.

Maybe we can mix it up a little, like God Muskat damn. .

btw - I have reason to believe that Carrie's been here in the past. OTOH, I'm pretty sure it's not worth God's time to see what people are saying about Him here. And I'd hope that He's got a pretty thick skin about such things. I've never understood why He would be put out by mere mortals using his name in vain, anyway. It seems so petty. If you were all powerful, would you care?!?

starting LF'er. This will either allow the Cubs to trade Jones by June 15th or Murton.

Money talks.

Now this leads to Pie who will be the next RF'er coming after August or in '08...meaning Murton plays RF until Pie ascends.

Now if Floyd is healthy and hits I can see Piniella doing what is common for LaRussa do in StL, changing the OF configuration as the game situation unfolds.

Starting lineup against RH pitching:

Soriano CF

DeRosa 2B

Lee 1B

Ramirez 3B

Floyd LF

Barrett C

Jones RF

Izturis SS

Against LH pitching

Soriano CF

Theriot 2B

Lee 1B

Ramirez 3B

Murton LF

Blanco C

DeRosa 2B

Cedeno SS

This would mean the Cubs roster going north without injuries is:

IF: Barrett/Blanco C, Lee/Ward 1B, DeRosa/Theriot 2B Izturis/Cedeno SS, Ramirez 3B (DeRosa)

OF: Floyd/Murton LF, Soriano/Pagan CF, Jones (Pagan/DeRosa) RF

14 position players

SP: Zambrano, Lilly, Marquis, Hill (open Prior/Miller)

RP: Dempster, Howry, Eyre, Cotts, Ohman, Wood, (open)

A trade is screaming to appear now. My guess is that a 3B/OF/C utility player would be perfect removing Cedeno but Cedeno if he makes the team and plays like in Sept '05 and winter '06-'07 could be a good utility addition allowing the normally brittle Izurtis rest against RHP'ng although that would mean Theriot platooning at 2B could be awefully young.

I could see the Cubs also substituting Pagan in LF or RF in late innings.

roster is not set:

Also Cubs could go north with Wood as the original long reliever and work into a short reliever role. This could mean (according to plan appearing on paper) that if Prior is in fact healthy than Miller is the long reliever as Wood moves to short reliever.

This could allow the Cubs to trade either Dempster or Miller in mid season or even Howry or Eyre. My guess is that Piniella will not have a set closer until August if Wood develops into a dominant reliever playing a hot hand and a committee keeping Dempser/Howry/Eyre fresh and active. Ohman will probably be the LOOGY and Cotts the middle rubber arm reliever.

Starting pitching will come down as the real difference maker, If Prior is really healthy and returns effective this changes everything. It moves Hill or Marquis to the bottom of the order unless either of them are effective.

But something will happen, whether it is Zambrano getting sore (jinx) or something,

I'm being optimistic that Floyd will not eat too heavily into Murton's AB's. If that's the case, I really like the construction of the offense.

Soriano CF

Derosa 2b

Lee 1b

Ramirez 3b

Murton/Floyd LF

Jones RF

Barrett C

Izturis SS

That's a nice looking line-up.

The bench with either Floyd/Murton, Theriot, Blanco, Ward, and Pagan or another player. I'd like a better RHed option for the bench, but it's not a bad group.

The rotation still could be a problem, but there is some depth. I'm starting to become guardedly optimistic about this season.
