Who is Suarez?
This is Suarez (early commercial from the Geico series):

Manager: "Suarez, I have some good news. I'm taking you out."

Suarez: "I thought you said you had some good news."

Manager: "I did. I just saved a bunch of money on my car insurance by switching to Geico. Give me the ball."

OK, I realize that's a different Suarez. :D

Haha, I remember that. He was also the Cubs' second baseman in Rookie of the Year: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107985/fullcredits

Where's Guzman? Is he no longer considered a prospect?

Correct, he's no longer rookie eligible (BA's definition of a prospect).

Hill, Guzman, Marmol, Marshall and Theriot all graduated last year.

As I'm going through my rankings, they'd look a whole lot better with all those guys included.

Got the book today. I don't think their site will post the top 10 and have the chat until January 29th. Here is the top 15:

1. Pie

2. Veal

3. Colvin

4. Samardzija

5. Gallagher

6. Patterson

7. Moore

8. Harvey

9. Huseby

10. Pawelek

11. Mateo

12. Dopirak

13. Ryu

14. Reed

15. Rundle

Sheez, how many ways can I disagree with this list? E-Patt is grossly underrated, but they put Shark (who has proved nothing yet) 4th? Over Gallagher and Pawelek? Dope, that is just a joke, non-prospect bust. Harvey too, though I could see him at the bottom of the list just for "tools" sake.

Not that anyone cares, but my Top 10; and despite his marginal "graduation", I'm going to include the Gooz--

1. Pie

2. Veal

3. Patterson

4. Guzman

5. Gallagher

6. Samardzija

7. Moore

8. Colvin

9. Rapada

10. Ceda

You criticize putting Samardzija so high and over Paw and Gallagher, yet not counting Guzman, you rate him only one place lower than BA did...and you dont even have Paw on the list?

Well I'm convinced.

Colvin high, EPatt low, Pawelek low.... other than that, fairly good list. Though I'd swap Gallagher and Samardzija just because Gallagher will be able to contribute sooner (I had him as a darkhorse candidate to be fifth starter before we threw 21 mil down the well).

I'm so glad you felt that contribution added something to the discussion.

why do people hate Pawelek?

Poor control, struggled early in the season, was demoted to the pen and had some lost velocity (came back into the rotation with fixed his mechanics and his velocity back and did much better, which is why I think BA is underrating him).

Dude's got some makeup questions after coming to camp out of shape. He basically cost himself a promotion this season and delayed his MLB debut by 1/2 a season at least.

I fully expect the boot to the backside the Cubs gave him last season will motivate him this offseason. Hopefully we don't go through a success builds complacency deal with him ever again.

And yet he bounced back and showed all the signs of why he's considered a big prospect.

Why do people like Harvey?

According to Flieta, Harvey has a tool you can't teach.

Which I've heard is significantly better than being a tool you can't teach.

St. Louis' system must be horrible. prospectpower.com has a Top 100 prospects and STL has ZERO on the list.

Don't scouts think that Samardjiafjeicadfasa is going to fast track to the majors a la Prior? I've heard him as a 2008 rotation possibility? Maybe that's why he's so high on the list?

Posted

I really don't see Samardzija fast-tracking. He has a lot to learn, especially since he didn't put as much time into baseball as most college prospects. I think 2009 is more likely.

And few players are as quick to the big leagues as Prior in this day and age (9 minor league starts before reaching the big leagues).

St. Louis doesn't have a very good system, but that has to be a pretty awful list to not have at least Rasmus on it, if not Garcia too.
