Hello all,

I just heard from David Kaplan on WGN Radio that Jim Hendry will be on Sports Central tonight.

I have an e-mail into David about what time he will be on. I'll post any response I receive.

I also posted this in the transactions thread about CF

Hendry was on with Kap and Waddle today and said some interesting things. He reiterated that he would not pursue a long term solution in center field. Said that Pie could be given the chance to start if they feel he is ready. Also said Pagan didn't really get a fair shake with his injury last year basically implying that he could be considered in center. When referencing Pie he mentioned that Piniella is a heck of hitting coach and that he does well with young guys. Pie is a great defender. Soriano will play a corner position as Lou sees it. No Jacque Jones talk. Hendry himself is feeling better.

Seems like they are leaning toward starting pie. I hope to god they can trade izturis and Jones for a shortstop, Renteria?

I'll take Renteria's line from last year 14 homers, 70 rbi's and .361 obp over Izturis' career year any day of the week.

But mainly, I was just suggesting someone who actually has the possibility of being traded. The braves have Yunel Escobar right behind him and need the salary relief. I cant think of another team that can afford to get rid of decent hitting shortstop.

Interesting that he's already acting like Jacque Jones is gone.

Jeez, I hope he gets good value in a ridiculous market like this.

C'mon Jimbo, do us proud.

pagan shouldn't be a starter on a team with a $20 mil payroll, let alone one with a $120+ payroll.

Yeah it seemed like Hendry was talking more in terms of Pagan getting some time out in center but there is no way he should be a starter. I like him as a bench guy/ defensive sub though because he can play all three spots with good range and arm strength.

Pagan's name shouldn't even be mentioned as a possibility for CF. He's 25th man on this roster at best.

I like Pagan.

I guess he's like Juan Pierre but not as fast and not as good a hitter? I can see what makes him so likable.

I thought Pagan was faster than Pierre by a good deal til he pulled his hammy early in the season. Seemed like that pull really dropped his speed in a hurry and he never did quite recover all the way during the season, though

Hamstring injuries can be very tricky and last a long time. This wouldn't surprise me at all.

Pagan is faster. Pierre actually shocked me last year because he didn't seem as fast as when he was with Florida for some reason.

So he can run back to the dugout even faster when he makes an out?

He stole a lot of bases in the minors, but he got caught at or below the break even point.

When he was drafted in 1999, most scouts saw his ceiling as 4th OF, and he's underperformed expectations.

The Mets tried to convert him into a "leadoff hitter" when he was drafted. He had not been a switch hitter in college, but the Mets wanted him to learn to switch hit to take advantage of his speed. In a small number of atbats last year, he actually hit better from the left side, but throughout his career he's been a better hitter from the right. Maybe he should drop hitting lefthanded.

In the minors, he hit one homerun per every 163 atbats. In a full season of AAA, he hit a total of 8.

If we had Chris Duncan in the outfield, maybe Pagan would have a tiny bit of value as a late-innings defensive replacement, but the Cubs don't have a starting OF who is an obvious defensive liability.

Pagan is part of the problem.

You forgot to mention that he's not very good defensively.

I don't know what the numbers say about him, but the few times I did see him play, he looked as shaky as Murton has ever looked, hesitating, misjudging and misplaying balls like many others. At best, he's average. I don't see how he can be considered defensive replacement level.

I thought Hendry use to be a scout? What has Angel Pagen ever done to warrent a roster spot, let alone be considered for a starting postion?

He looks like Beltran.

What has he ever done is a question about performance, not tools. Hendry would not be interested in such a debate. What had Cedeno ever done to deserve a 40 man roster space when he did? Nothing. But his tools are what appealed to Hendry.
