I am still trying to figiure out how goony has enough insider info to know that the Cubs are the least efficiently run org. in MLB. Can you help me out on that one, goony? Do you want to at least qualify it?

I think his formula is very simple: wins / salary. A basic return on investment calculation.

Well, the way the years past has played out, where the Cubs has traditionally played horribly, other than 2003. I don't think it's too hard to figure it out, especially signing players that are not quality players, and also non-productive players.

I do feel that the Cubs are the least efficent run organization, based on the moves that deemed uncessary, and that the Cubs don't make the right proper necessary moves to make the team better.

Kenny Williams, not a moneyball guy.

Walt Jocketty, not a moneyball guy.

Moneyball is overrated. Stat-head GM'ing, overrated.

Not saying I want Gary Hughes as my GM, but the whole Moneyball flap should be viewed as an important contribution to the evolution of effective baseball management, NOT as the end-all be-all of how to produce a winner.

You don't have to be a moneyball "guy" for me to want you to be on my radar for Gm...BUT YOU BROUGHT UP SOME BAD EVIDENCE HERE.

Kenny Williams is a terrible Gm, come on now, even morons can see that.

Gary Hughes?

I just threw up a little in my mouth.

Why is that?

Gary Hughes has value in being a scout. I'm surely not about to debate that. But after the comments of his that I have read, I don't want him in charge of making the decisions.

Perhaps my comment was a bit over the top, as I did not mean to disparage him personally, but the things he's said would make me very scared to see what kind of a team he'd put on the field.

You can't leave out the fact that there's replacement level to worry about. We should be talking about Marginal Payroll / Marginal Wins

(club payroll - (28 x major league minimum) / ((winning percentage - .300) x 162)

AL East Club Marginal Wins Cost per Marginal Win
Least Efficient Yankees 48.4 $3,832,791
Most Efficient Blue Jays 38.4 $1,634,349

AL Central Club Marginal Wins Cost per Marginal Win
Least Efficient Royals 13.4 $2,846,119
Most Efficient Twins 47.4 $1,144,304

AL West Club Marginal Wins Cost per Marginal Win
Least Efficient Mariners 29.4 $2,680,402
Most Efficient A's 44.4 $1,195,655

NL East Club Marginal Wins Cost per Marginal Win
Least Efficient Braves 30.4 $2,664,503
Most Efficient Marlins 29.4 $198,724

NL Central Club Marginal Wins Cost per Marginal Win
Least Efficient Cubs 17.4 $4,900,488
Most Efficient Reds 31.4 $1,648,201

NL West Club Marginal Wins Cost per Marginal Win
Least Efficient Giants 27.7 $2,920,593
Most Efficient Padres 39.4 $1,541,628

Figures taken from Baseball Prospectus

The Cubs are obviously the worst of the bunch.

Is that very simple or too simple?

I'm not saying the Cubs have done a great job of spending their money lately, but without taking into account the number of huge injuries to key players over the last couple of seasons, having this very simple formula leads to a very unbalanced point of view.

I would think that most current GMs don't know much if anything about the more complex SABR stats, but they have someone close to them who does. I think most current GMs would not have answered in a similar manner, but would not know much about the subject of the question.

Sure, if you completely disregard the remainder of the balance sheet. If he's refering only to performance on the field, he's probably right. I was refering the entire org. I'd bet they have coffers of cash from all the yearsof high attendance, merchandising, etc. combined with low(er) payroll. None of us knows for sure, but its a reasonable assumption.
