Jerry Crasnick from ESPN:

• As Cubs GM Jim Hendry keeps spending to upgrade his roster, he'll eventually have to address the team's most important concern -- locking up the staff ace. Carlos Zambrano, a mere 25, has four consecutive 200-inning seasons on his résumé. As rumors swirl of Barry Zito chasing an $80-100 million deal, it's scary to think how expensive Zambrano might be a year from now. Hendry signed Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez to long-term contracts in the spring in recent years, and is likely to make a run at Zambrano well before Opening Day.

YES. This is the #1 priority now - bigger than signing Lilly or Meche or a CF. Keeping the staff ace is a must.

Since Z is very ripe for a devastating arm injury, should we consider letting him walk after next year? Is the money worth the risk?

And make Hill our number 1 starter. That's ok because we have a great .... oh wait our lineup sucks too.

I would not even think of letting him walk. Trade? Sure. But you can't let him walk.

I just don't think we should sign him right now. Though, that's usually my stance on re-signing players. I don't think Zambrano is going to make himself more valuable over the course of the year.

If he goes 21-6 and wins the Cy Young, he will.

And he could also go 6-21 because he pitches through an injury without telling anyone.

I don't think the chances for him significantly increasing his value over the course of the year are great.

Insurance only covers the first three years, right? How would that affect an extension? I'm comfortable with 4 years, $50 million for Zambrano with some club options. I would also backload the contract and hope for inflation.

that won't be anywhere close to enough. Try adding at least $5M per year and probably a year or two.

So, Boras thinks D-Mat is worth $100million over six years, since he's a 26-year-old with so much talent. Isn't Boras Z's agent? Open up that checkbook, Mr. Hendry, but, by all means, GET IT DONE!

Z fired him.

OH SNAP!

If Zito makes the $100MM he's rumored to make, Zambrano will sign for no less than 5-years $85MM in my opinion, since he is leaps and bounds better than Zito, and everyone and their mothers know it

yeah zambrano is going to get mega bucks. maybe 6/$90. he's an absolute horse always going 200+ IP with ERA in the 3.00's....plus good amount of K's. if he had another year like the last couple and was a FA the yankees or red sox would offer him $150M.

we should bat him cleanup, too. :D

Unless they extend him for a hometown discount, I would not be at all surprised to see Z get $20m per. Maybe 5/100. I think I'd pay it. Heck, if he survived 4 years of Dusty and came out unscathed, he must be unbreakable.
