In just 129 games. 110 the year before and 89 in 2004. You'd be a fool to expect him to be your everyday CF.

You'd also be a fool not to like his production against RHP.

Isn't that what you'd look for in a platoon player?

Yeah, you called him a platoon player at best. He's a good platoon player and you can get 130 games out of him - the reason he played 110 and 89 was because his team didn't always play him against RHP either.

130 games isn't full time, IMO. He'd still need a platoon mate.

so, put Soriano in CF against LHP and sign a cheap guy who can hit lefties.

one of the reason why soriano signed with the cubs is because hendry promised that they would give him a postion and leave him there. i very much doubt hendry would go back on his word and move around soriano between 2 positions.

It also buys you another year for Pie to play in Iowa, so you can find out if he's your CF of the future, or if you need to go in another direction.

It's not like he hasn't been playing full seasons because his teams didn't appreciate him.

Anyone care to translate this? The triple negative lost me!

Well Yahoo Sports is saying..

Free agent outfielder Luis Gonzalez is close to signing with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Gonzalez's agent, Gregg Clifton, met Tuesday with the Dodgers, who have yet to make a formal offer but are likely to come in under the reported $7 million the Baltimore Orioles put on the table last week.

Despite the lower offer, Gonzalez could sign with the Dodgers soon, perhaps this week. He has said he wants to remain in the NL West to play regularly against the team that let him go, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

I thought Gonzalez was going to the Cardinals?

I'd still like to know what the Nats want for Church. Honestly, I think if the Cubs acquire Church (without giving up Marshall, Cotts or Guzman), sign Schmidt and sign Bonds (I know it won't happen) they have a 100 win team. Platoon Jones with DeRosa in RF, Soriano plays 2B, Bonds play LF with Murton spelling him.

vs RHP

Soriano

Church

Bonds

Lee

Ramirez

Jones

Barrett

Rotoworld:

The Philadelphia Inquirer says a deal sending Jon Lieber to Milwaukee for Kevin Mench and Derrick Turnbow is in place, pending the result of the Phillies' negotiations with the White Sox.

The Phillies might not make the trade unless they can get Freddy Garcia from the White Sox, probably using Aaron Rowand and Gavin Floyd. It's unclear whether that will work, and White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen isn't wild about the idea. "We have a center fielder right now," Guillen said. "I won't trade one of my pitchers one-for-one for Rowand right now. He's a good player, but we're not desperate for a center fielder. I love Aaron, but we need more."

I think we could match that pretty easily. Lieber could probably match Meche's production and he would come cheaper cost-wise. Health is obviously a concern, but he's averaging just under 30 starts a year over the last 3.

He did put out 52 doubles last year, good for a tie for 2nd in MLB.

With Schmidt being a Dodger, does anyone else think we're going to push hard for Zito?

I don't.

I think the focus is Lilly and Meche, like we've been hearing all along.

Zito will be choosing between the Mets for 5/75 and the Rangers for 6/100.

Yay for overpaying for mediocrity! I pray for trade opportunities to open up.

I think he's going to get either Lilly or Meche not both. Meche is a backup to Lilly. Then Hendry will try like hell to pry another starter from a team.

Which is a much better idea. I'll settle for Lilly, but Meche is a mess. Sign Lilly and try to trade for Westbrook, Penny or Jennings.

Sounds good to me. A big no for Meche. Let KC have him.

Roto on CFloyd:

The Mariners have reportedly joined the Cubs and Athletics in expressing interest in free agent Cliff Floyd.

A Floyd signing would likely lead to Ben Broussard's departure in a trade. The Orioles are believed to be intereted in Broussard.

Let's look across town. Williams is supposedly shopping either Buehrle, Garcia, Garland, or Vazquez to open up a spot for McCarthy. Why don't we look into that and try to pry one of them (with the exception of Vazquez for obvious reasons) away? They need some bullpen help so I would try to trade them Eyre, Marmol, and maybe a couple of other prospects for one of those three pitchers.

Whether we like it or not, that is probably the best chance that the Cubs are going to have to improve on their rotation. Either one of the Sox pitchers or Jake Westbrook.

Dodgers sign Lieberthal

Dodgers sign catcher Mike Lieberthal, who had been with the Phillies, to a one-year contract with an option for 2008.

Lieberthal is believed to be guaranteed just more than $1 million. The soon-to-be 35-year-old will take over as the backup for Russell Martin. Toby Hall, who would have cost at least two or maybe three times as much as Lieberthal, is either going to be traded or non-tendered.

Let's hope its the Dodgers, because, an aging veteran on downward slope signing with the Cardinals has all-too familiar and tired outcome.

Roto on Mike Piazza

Although the two sides discussed a two-year deal, Mike Piazza is expected to agree to a one-year contract with the A's.

The contract will be worth $8 million-$9 million. Piazza apparently preferred the flexibility of a one-year contract in the event that he does not enjoy his new role.

Yeah they start testing for roids, and his HR power turns into doubles power. No connection, I'm sure.

OPS+ the last four years:

131/119/112/97

Not a good trend. With him in his late 30s, there's no reason to think the slide won't continue.

Ted Lilly still isn't sure where he'll be pitching in 2007. But it won't be in Toronto. Lilly crossed the Blue Jays off his list Wednesday and has narrowed his possible destinations to the Cubs and Yankees, his agent, Larry O'Brien, told ESPN.com at the winter meetings. O'Brien, who is seeking a four-year, $40 million deal, plans to meet with Yankees GM Brian Cashman on Wednesday night.

well I hope we get him since Schimdt is gone...We cant come out of the meetings with no one..Lilly would be a good number 3..Hopefully we get him and maybe swing a trade for someone to be our numbr 2

If you read the SunTimes articles, it made it sounds like the Cubs were planning to sign both Lilly AND Meche. Take if for what it's worth.
