I don't know about horrible. Over the last 3 years he's had a 3.88 average in day games (26 starts)...league adjusted that's probably closer to the 3.4-3.5 range. I'm not saying he's an all star, but he's not "horrible".

That's because of his 2.61 ERA in day games in 2004. He's gone 4.59 in 2005 and 4.12 in 2006 in day games. Maybe "horrible" isn't the right word. But he's not good.

I honestly believe the Cubs have in-house options that are better then Meche.

If you can honestly look at the numbers that Marshall, Gooz and company posted and Dempster posted when he last was a starter and say that, you must see something I don't.

Well, I'm assuming improvements from Marshall, Gooz and possibly Cotts. Dempster? Maybe not.

Once you consider the money saved (which allows you to upgrade on offense), I really believe Marshall, Gooz, Cotts, etc. is the way to go (IF the alternative is someone like Meche).

The difference is that Meche as been in the league for 6 years and still hasnt done anything. He may do marginally better than Marshall, Guzman, etc next year, but not $9.7 million better. I'd say at Marshall will have an ERA+ within 5 points of Meche.

So, since Monday morning, how's everyone's work productivity been at the office? On a scale of 1-10 (1 poorest, 10 best) mine's at about -27.

The 2006 Winter Meetings: Hurry up and wait. I live for this.

well my production can be seen in my work done for school and considering finals are next week and my productivity is at about a -10...i'd say the cubs better sign someone i like to make it a worthwhile waste of time

The White Sox are reportedly asking for John Lackey from the Angels for Joe Crede.

I would be very upset if the Sox ended up with my favorite pitcher.

Why would the Sox want another starter? That rumor seems unrealistic

Trade 2 starters to ATL for Hudson/Jones/Giles? Excess starting pitching in this market is incredibly (over)valued.

• Kenny Lofton is attracting interest from the Rangers, Cubs and Rockies as a possible center field option. But first he might have to come down on his asking price. One front-office source said Lofton is looking for $6 million on a one-year deal.

I'd be asking that much if I was better than Juan Pierre and just watched him get a $9M/year contract. That isn't an unreasonable amount for Lofton, IMO.

Especially for just 1 year.

It's not unreasonable to ask, but it'd be stupid to pay that much. He's a platoon guy at best.

A platoon guy at best? He had a .360 OBP last year.

As Truffle pointed out, there's been more money thrown at worse players this offseason.

In just 129 games. 110 the year before and 89 in 2004. You'd be a fool to expect him to be your everyday CF.

You'd also be a fool not to like his production against RHP.

Isn't that what you'd look for in a platoon player?

If Theriot could play CF, Theriot/Lofton at 5-6m is not a bad platoon.

I can't imagine anyone will actually give Lofton 6m.

Steve Phillips is a fountain of knowledge, here is his latest post:

The Royals, Cubs and Blue Jays are in on right-hander Gil Meche.

Yeah, you called him a platoon player at best. He's a good platoon player and you can get 130 games out of him - the reason he played 110 and 89 was because his team didn't always play him against RHP either.

130 games isn't full time, IMO. He'd still need a platoon mate.

I searched back a couple of pages and didn't see this posted, so sorry if it's old:

The Mets are expected to be the Rangers' chief competition for Zito, but New York is not willing to offer more than four years or spend more than $70 million.

The Cubs and Mariners are expected to make a run at Zito as well.

so, put Soriano in CF against LHP and sign a cheap guy who can hit lefties.

It also buys you another year for Pie to play in Iowa, so you can find out if he's your CF of the future, or if you need to go in another direction.

I'm not opposed to Lofton on a one year deal, but you have to do it with a platoon partner. It's not like he hasn't been playing full seasons because his teams didn't appreciate him. He's a mess in the field now, and an old dude who is going to need the rest.
