I'd really like them to go ahead and sign Lofton or trade for Church, then package Jacque + pitching and see if the Padres are interested (Peavy).

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say an average outfielder in his early 30s and a few not-so-great pitching prospects are not going to fetch a 25 year old guy who is at least a #2, and maybe a #1 if he puts it all together like he did in 2004.

Oh, I doubt they take that deal, but it's a starting point. The bolded looked to be a large if, at times, last season. If he's rumored to be available- why not at least make the call?

Jones, Veal, Patterson/Pie and a lower-level pitching prospect probably would be enough. Is it worth that? Maybe. He's darn good.

I can't believe that you included Eric in a hypothetical trade.

Why not? If EPatt has to move off second his value is severly diminished. Plus hes way overvalued here as it is.

Prior and Jones would, and I would do that in a heartbeat.

Z, Peavy, Lilly, Miller, Hill... yeah, I could live with that.

There's not a snowball's chance in hell that would get it done.

id trade the farm for jake peavy. hes better than zambrano.

Does Prior count? Seriously, offer Prior and some top prospects (Veal? Gallagher? Pie? E. Patterson?). I'm not sure what SD's bullpen looks like right now, but we have plenty to offer in that department as well.

If Prior is the centerpiece of the deal, how does that make SD better?

If you want Peavy, I'm thinking you have to be prepared to trade someone like DLee.

Probably. I'm just grasping at straws. I'm wondering if overwhelming them with prospects, including guys who may be considered "major league talent" might be a way to go. If they thought Prior was healthy, it would be an interesting scenario to offer him and something like Pie (ML ready?) Patterson (ready soon?) Gallagher. Maybe even some sort of package that includes Hill.

The Cubs certainly can't afford to weaken their offense, but as was mentioned by others, offer the farm. Peavy is a stud and you can build your rotation around him and Zambrano for years, IMO.

It seems like yesterday we thought the Cubs had the best rotation baseball with Prior, Wood, Zambrano, Clement and Maddux just before the 2004 season. Hard to imagine then it would have come to this so soon. It'll be Dusty's legacy.

you never know what will get a trade done...yesterday the white sox wanted a major league ready starter for garcia...they got 2 pitching prospects today. i certainly wish we had called. garcia at 8 mil a year is worth meche and lilly at 11 mil! and we certainly have the pitching prospects!

you just never know!

In Jayson Stark's article about the Garcia to Philly trade, he mentions that Philly has backed off the supposed follow-up deal with the Brewers, which was Lieber for Mench and Turnbow.

I wonder if Hendry can send Jones and Eyre to Philly for Lieber and prospects.

Rumors earlier this offseason had the Mets turning down a Milledge for John Patterson deal.

Pie, Marshall, and Marmol for Patterson and Church?

Patterson has too many health concerns. When healthy, he can be very good, and is a strikeout machine. Sounds like a Cubs pitcher already.

Anyway, I doubt Hendry would pursue him, as his intent right now seems to be durability in the starting staff.

Really? Then why did he sign Lilly and not Suppan?

Over the last 4 years, Suppan averaged 31.5 starts per year and Lilly averaged 30 starts per year. Not a real big difference.

I'll take Peavy please.

I'd take Peavy too.

Pie and Marmol for Peavy?

Are you thinking that Towers has had a brain tumor and cannot think straight anymore?

Why is Peavy talked about as available at all? If they think he is who he was in 2004 and 2005, it makes no sense. Yet his name has been in play for several months now.

Isn't Peavy one of the injury risks we keep talking about, or am I confuisng him with someone else?

If so, what about Pie, Prior, and one of Marmol/Marshall/Mateo/Guzman/Ryu?

Well, his name has been out there for some deals netting a major bat. But I don't think he's available for minor leaguers. If we were offering Lee or Aramis, that would probably get the job done.

hmm...

Who is their catcher? :D

The only way SD trades Peavy is if you significantly upgrade their offense in 2007.

Barrett, Pie, and one of the afor mentioned young arms? Too high a price?

Pending a physical, I'd do it. Peavy is an incredible pitcher if he's entirely healthy.

The rumor that was floating around here for awhile was Peavy and Adrian Gonzalez for Manny Ramirez. I don't think it really had any legs, but the Padres fans I spoke with thought it would be wonderful. They aren't happy with Peavy. They are calling Young their #1.

I would too, but he is a big risk. I want the Cubs to have some greatness somewhere, either hitting or pitching. I doubt they'll do what it takes to have a great lineup, might as well have a great rotation.

Hendry now needs to add 2 starters, we appear to have lost out on Meche. Not that i wanted Meche but that seemed to be the plan and then to trade Jones and trash for a serviceable pitcher.Would something like Dempster,Ohman and Marshall get us any SP? What about Jones,Marmol and Cedeno? Would anyone else think about offering Veal and Pie for Peavy,Harden or Haren??(get well asap jim)
