Say we miss out on Lilly and or Meche. Hendry will probably try to trade for a starting pitcher. Who is/may be available and who do you want?

Some Options:

Jason Jennings - Rockies - last year of contract, questionable results

Jake Westbrook/Cliff Lee - Indians - probably not be available

Tim Hudon - Braves - High salary, bad 2006

Freddy Garcia/Javier Vasquez - White Sox - 2 trades with Sox in 2 months?

Jake Peavy - Padres - Injury concerns? Rumored to be available

Brad Penny - Dodgers - May not be available

Dontrelle Willis - Marlins - cost to acquire would be extreme

Mike Maroth - Tigers - He's not very good

Bartolo Colon - Angels - huge salary, huge guy, injured

Who else is therethat might be available? The trade market looks as weak as the free agent market.

I'd really like them to go ahead and sign Lofton or trade for Church, then package Jacque + pitching and see if the Padres are interested (Peavy).

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say an average outfielder in his early 30s and a few not-so-great pitching prospects are not going to fetch a 25 year old guy who is at least a #2, and maybe a #1 if he puts it all together like he did in 2004.

Lieber, Blanton, Silva, Rodrigo Lopez, and Maholm

Maholm is not available. He was one of the Rockies rumored targets and the Pirates said he was untouchable.

I'd take Freddy - could the Cubs send JJ + $$ and/or prospect(s) to the South Side without too much difficulty? Freddy Garcia was part of the M's 2001 100+ win season w/Piniella, and Z would have someone from his own country to talk to.

Really, the only bad season in recent memory that Freddy had was 2003, and he played most of that season with terrible equilibrium problems in his (was it?) right ear. I mean, he had green stuff oozing out of the ear - he was seriously messed up.

But no way the Cubs swing that.

Second choice would be JJ for Penny, but that ain't happening either.

Also, CF for the Cubs is a question mark. Trading JJ takes away the only current viable option.

Oh, I doubt they take that deal, but it's a starting point. The bolded looked to be a large if, at times, last season. If he's rumored to be available- why not at least make the call?

Jones, Veal, Patterson/Pie and a lower-level pitching prospect probably would be enough. Is it worth that? Maybe. He's darn good.

Rumors earlier this offseason had the Mets turning down a Milledge for John Patterson deal.

Pie, Marshall, and Marmol for Patterson and Church?

Maybe a #1? I know he had a down year in 2006, but the two seasons prior to that - at ages 23 and 24 - he posted 2.27 and 2.88 ERAs. There's no maybe about it. He's a legit ace.

But is he healthy?

Yeah, a down year like that is enough to at least throw the maybe in there. It can't just be ignored.

His peripherals are largely intact. I'm not worried about his performance.

Patterson has too many health concerns. When healthy, he can be very good, and is a strikeout machine. Sounds like a Cubs pitcher already.

Anyway, I doubt Hendry would pursue him, as his intent right now seems to be durability in the starting staff.

I know this is more of a trade thread but I am just wondering what everyones thoughts on Mark Mulder are. I am not really sure what his injury concerns are, but if healthy you have to figure he has a higher ceiling than most of the canidates dicsussed ths offseason. If he isnt broken down, which I am not sure of, a KWood type deal would have to better than selling the farm for some of these guys or giving an arm and a leg to someone like Meche.

Edit: Nevermind, I just looked at his stats for the past few years and found out he will miss at least the first month of the season. Sorry for wasting of a post.

Hey!!! I created a thread proposing that a few weeks ago and barely anyone responded. Where were you then, Rob?

Really? Then why did he sign Lilly and not Suppan?

Prior and Jones would, and I would do that in a heartbeat.

Z, Peavy, Lilly, Miller, Hill... yeah, I could live with that.
