Update at 4:00

ESPN.com's Jayson Stark is hearing that Gil Meche is leaning toward signing with the Blue Jays.

Meche to the Blue Jays and Ted Lilly to the Cubs still look like good bets. The Cubs and Royals are the other two finalists for Meche. His decision could come on Wednesday night.

Bold prediction:

Meche to Blue Jays

Lilly to Yankees

Cubs to 5th place

Wow how quickly things have changed. Yesterday we would have been thrilled to not get either of the two.

I didn't say the Cubs would be any better with them, did I?

According to the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, free agent Gil Meche likely will sign with the Cubs.

The rumor has been that Meche would pick Toronto, but a member of the Blue Jays said it was Toronto's understanding that Meche would be signing with the Cubs. We're not sure whether this is a sign Ted Lilly is going to end up with the Yankees. The Cubs have been hoping to sign both.

Starting pitcher Gil Meche, who has never pitched for another professional organization, will be rejoining his old manager, Lou Piniella, in Chicago with the Cubs.

take it for what its worth...its from a mariners blog i found...dunno the reliability but thought id pass it along if no one else has

Oh Snap. I will reserve judgement until I see the numbers of the deal. 9 mill a year sounds about right in this market, though theres a good chance we probably went 10 or so. Yesterday Scout.com was reporting that Meche had higher offers from other teams than the Cubs, but his heart was set on signing with Chicago. As long as it's not a ginormous contract, I'll take Meche since he has that intriguing potential to be better than what his numbers say he is.

Haha. This is getting out of hand. The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has changed it's tune:

Seattle Post-Intelligencer[/url]"] Starting pitcher Gil Meche, who has never pitched for another professional organization other than Seattle, may be rejoining his old manager, Lou Piniella, in Chicago with the Cubs.

The Toronto Blue Jays thought they'd been beaten out by the Cubs, but 30 minutes after they heard that, Toronto reversed field and said their four-year, $40 million offer might yet prevail.

You know. After thinking about it a little bit, I wouldn't mind Meche. I'd certainly prefer Lilly, but if we can get Penny (IF IF IF IF) or something like that, it wouldn't be upsetting to me.

I want Meche to make this decision by tonight. I'd love to have the rotation complete.

are you OK with having Meche in our Rotation?

I'd rather not have the rotation complete tonight if Meche is the one that completes it.

I wouldn't have minded one of Lilly or Meche, not both.

Honestly? Yeah, I am. I think Lilly and Meche are both ideal middle of the rotation guys. And with Zambrano and Hill already here, that's what their role will be.

29 innings? Quite a sample we have there.

From CBS Sportsline:

Blue Jays GM Ricciardi...compared the hard-throwing Meche to A.J. Burnett, who signed a $55 million, five-year contract after going a modest 49-50 in his first seven seasons in Florida. Meche went 55-44 with a 4.65 ERA in six seasons with Seattle. "He's a big strong guy. I think his upside is front of him," Ricciardi said.

Well screw it, $10M per year is a bargain then!

Too bad we don't play in the NL West.

hahaha if only! I'm not posting the numbers to say that he'd do that in the NL over the full season. I'm not saying whether we should sign him or not, though I do like his upside. I AM just posting the numbers to add to our discussion. Arroyo's successful switch to the NL last year gives me hope that someone like Meche could also make a successful transition.
