No, I dont blame Bartman. I blame Alou. Look man, a guy is there to see you guys win. You dont react like that. You scarred him for life, while you take your multi-million dollar paycheck and leave. If Alou hadnt reacted like he did, it wouldn'tve of put everyone in a state of anger/dismay. It could've been just like any other missed catch in the foul zone. But Alou had to react like the A-hole he is..

If you were 5 outs away from the world series and you went to catch a ball basically on the dividing line between the field and the stands that would make you 4 outs from the world series and some dude with stupid headphones knocked the ball away, you would, in the heat of the moment, stop to rationally think things through? You would stop to think, "Everyone makes mistakes, back to business as usually." and calmly walk away? Not saying Alou is excused, but thats an intense situation.

Did he say anything afterwords? Apology? Announce that it was his own fault?

He did apologize quite profusely to Bartman and his teammates before Game 7 as I recall.

1) It's not a 100 percent guarantee Alou catches that ball.

2) If Gonzo turns the DP, we go into the 9th up 3-1 and could have brought in JoBo to shut the Marlins down.

3) Dusty is a fool.

Game 6 causes me much pain, so this will be my only post in this thread.

If Gonzalez fielded the ball cleanly, it would have been hard to turn the double play. He would have had the out at second which would put runners on first and third with two outs and the Cubs up 3-1. Then Derrek Lee doubles. Cabrera stopped at third on Lee's double anyway which means only one run scores. Cubs still lead 3-2 with 2 outs and Lowell up. They walked Lowell - which they probably would have done in this situation as well - to face Jeff Conine. Conine popped out. Inning ends with the Cubs up 3-2.

Alex Gonzales deserves most of the blame, just my opinion.

The whole team choked after his gaff. He does seem to escape criticism, doesn't he?

99.9% of non-Cubs fans mention Bartman whenever Game 6 is brought up and I correct them every single time.

I know they have lots quite a few camera angles. Maybe even some home-made video. I wonder if someone will try to find out if Alou could've caught the ball if Bartman didnt go for it.

On The History Channel, they had a special where they showed the shooting animated/3D... The same should be done with this incident. I'm sure it will be done someday.

what Alou should have done is just take a year's worth of justifiable rage out on the ump after blowing this, the ultimate of bad calls.

seriously. look at the picture. the guy in grey's arm is parallel to the rail. Bartman is thrusting his arms out as far as they will go. Alou's body is contorted in a way that makes it physically impossible for his glove to be over the wall.

the ball was in play. fan interference. batter's out.

Now, if only we can convince the umpire to wear white with blue pinstripes..

I'm glad you mentioned the bit about that being a marginal DP ball - I thikn it's a common misperception about that inning. A lot of people just say he botched a DP ball, but the hop was too big and Cabrera isn't THAT slow. AGony would have gotten one but probably not two ... he just got greedy.

Alou is a hothead, I blame him more than Bartman. Alou is the pro, Bartman is not.

If Alou kept his wits about him he would have yelled 'fan interference' at the ump instead of throwing a hissy fit. Regardless of whether or not technically it was fan interference (I agree with jjgman that it could have been called as such, though it probably wasn't) it was damn close, and the ump might have been on the fence for a moment on whether or not to call it. We'll never know.

The name "Steve Bartman" makes me furious beyond description. Not because he mistakenly interfered witha foul ball, but because the subhuman tripe in the media took it upon themselves to destroy a man's life over a freaking mistake at a baseball game in order to further their own careers. Disgusting.

Didn't the Sun-Times publish his address the next day or something like that?

If so, man that is the very definition of "subhuman".

Just like to point out that the two people sitting on either side of Bartman are moving AWAY from thr ball. I guess two out of three ain"t bad!?!

True. The guy two to his right seems to be making a play for the ball though too.

Alex made an error. A horrible error. Did it cost the Cubs the game? No. And it certainly didn't cost the playoffs. He wasn't the pitcher. If Prior had kept his cool, the Marlins wouldn't have rallied and beat them. And in Game 7, which many people seem to forget is the game that actually lost the playoffs for the Cubs, Kerry Wood sucked. Big time. When someone convinces me that the pitchers would have done better without the error, then maybe I'll concede Alex was the bad guy. Until then, ain't gonna happen. The Cubs as a team lost, not Alex, not Bartman, the Cubs as a team. Period.

the cubs win ATLEAST 3 world series if bartman doesn't steal that ball from Alou.

This seems somewhat unlikely.

yea, you're probably right.

2 more world series is more realistic

i suspect prior and wood still get hurt in 04, but i'm willing to grant you one. i honestly believe we win the world series if the bartman thing doesn't happen.

in other news, i want to die all over again.

Look at it this way:

Yes, Prior imploded. However, if Gonzo turns the DP and doesn't drop it like the spaz he was, we're out of the inning up 3-1 and Prior most likely doesn't start the 9th.

So in a way, yes, you can blame AGonz more than Prior.

(yes, I broke my own rule of posting more than once in this thread. I'm off to go vomit with rage over Game 6.)
