The Providence Journal believes that the Red Sox and J.D. Drew will agree to a four-year deal with a vesting or club option for a fifth year.

The deal could be worth $14 million-$15 million per year. Both the Journal and ESPN's Peter Gammons believe that the Dodgers are prohibited from offering Drew arbitration under the terms of his contract with the club. If that's the case, the Red Sox could sign him and keep their first-round pick for now.

56-60 million over 4? I guess that's good considering the market, but still, with his injury history, that could be major cash down the drain. They could have the all-underperformance team like last year again

I can't wait for the Boston sports media to go completely ape over this deal. He will find another way to wiggle out of Boston within two years for more money.

Fixed.

So on the one hand the RedSox are trying to get rid of Manny who apparently has an attitude problem, and they are going to replace him with Drew who according to former teammates also has an attitude problem. Go figure. As an added bonus for the Redsox, JD Drew will never outproduce Manny. The story just gets better and better.

Drew's contract w/ LA said they can't offer him arbitration. However, since he prematurely terminated the contract, I wonder if LA is still bound by that clause?

I also believe this is true. I freely admit I have no inside sources.

Do I get credit for being a reliable source iff I'm right?

This just sounds so pointless to report now

They're already trying to drive him out - one of the newspapers has a poll of fans asking if Boston should sign him. Last I heard the response was somewhere around 80+% saying no.

If the Sox actually trade Manny and sign Drew to that heavy of a $ contract, they are setting themselves up for a really bad situation. No matter what anyone says, the fans will basically look at it as the Red Sox replacing Manny with Drew and there ain't no way that Drew will put up the numbers Manny did, even if he stays healthy all year.

This has "bad" written all over for it for the Red Sox.

You can have Drew, we'll take Manny.

Murt - Soriano - Manny

Is this Jim's master plan?

Or could it be Manny - Lugo - Soriano (Murt off the bench)?

Wowow.

Murt > Lugo... even taking into account the fact it'd force Soriano into center

They are "trying to get rid of Manny" because Manny has asked to be traded out of Boston, again. He's asked about 4 times now. It's not just a matter of a guy having a bit of an attitude, it's a case of the guy not wanting to be on the team.

To be fair to Manny, he's been a good sport about it the last few years. As long as they make an attempt in good faith to trade him, he works hard for them.

That's debatable.

Has there ever been an established reason why Manny wants out so badly? I mean, I'm no Boston fan, but great baseball town, pretty good ballclub year in and year out, great classic stadium to play in, owners who are genuinely trying to win....

Doesn't seem all that bad to me.

Not to mention the fact that Manny CHOSE to play in Boston. Perhaps is was all about the money, but Boston CHOSE to give Manny more money than anyone else was offering. So, I'm not sure that I see the reason that Manny has been such a pisser and moaner in his time in Boston. He CHOSE to play for the team who would pay him the most.

And, since that time, all you hear about is how Manny wants out. I don't get it. I'd prefer that we just sign Drew.

Yep, I'd love to see Hendry steal Drew out from under Boston. And Lugo as well.

The turnaround in OBP would definitely impact offensive production.

Rumblings over the past 50 years have suggested that Boston isn't exactly a great place for minorities to live. Not that the people are necessarily racist, but that there isn't as large of a contingent of Hispanic or African American people there as in many other large metro cities like NY, Chicago, or LA and that means less things that might interest people or those origins.

Or...Manny could just be a weird guy and wants a change of pace once in a while. I don't exactly know how "Manny being Manny" would work with Sweet Lou in the dugout.

Not that Manny has done anything remotely criminally wrong, but I've said it a thousand times, if the Cubs want to put an outfield of Hitler, Hussein, and OJ out there, that's fine by me as long as they win the WS. Point being, as long as they produce, I could care less what they are doing the other 21 hours of the day when they aren't winning ballgames.

I disagree with that. But Ramirez is not in any way comparable to those guys.
