I just think you guys are way to negative about everything. Either way you guys would have been upset even if we had signed Drew or if Soriano plays up to his contract.

just stop talking (writing, typing, whatever)

Stop being a and listen to other peoples opinions whether they post statistics or revise there posts.

Enough.

You guys are basing the begining of Drews career over Sorianos complete career. You cant compare them. On another note I tried to delete that post because it didnt make sense.

you should probably do that with all of your posts

Instead of reading about 70 pages I'm going to step out on a limb and say the reaction was negative.

Negative = Me, KC, Jon, TT, Navin, CubsinNY, Rob (might have missed a few)

Positive= Everyone else

Largely, but there are a few holding out positivity. A few of us (me, jjgman, XZero, ConstableRabbit and a few others) are holding to the "hate the money, love the move anyway" opinion.

You're missing a category. There are people who are still unsure, and want to wait to hear the official numbers of the deal. Put me in that category.

I have been laughing so hard reading these posts. Soriano not a good player? Soriano overrated?

he is a good player, but he's also overrated. he's being paid like one of the best players in baseball, and he clearly isn't.

The Cubs have so many holes, spending all your resources to plug one isn't efficient.

Which gets to my point. If the Cubs have told Hendry he can spend up to the luxury tax limit, then I really don't have anything against this signing other than length of the deal, which was going to be required to get him on board. As long as we can still make the other required upgrades, I'm okay with things. In general, I prefer a "Stars and Scrubs" approach, because it is easier to upgrade the scrubs later on.

Now, just how much of a "star" Soriano is going to be is very open for debate.

I'm personally optimistic that he is turning a corner with his pitch recog. / plate discipline. I'm hoping that bringing in Perry as hitting coach will help if Soriano can adapt to the zone hitting approach.

BTW - If I had unlimited funds this offseason, I'd sign Drew for CF, trade for Manny, put Murton in RF and stick Fonzie at 2B. Defense be damned. :)

Oversimplifying. There are people in the middle, as well.

Okay you can post your opinion, but quit overgeneralizing the thoughts/opinions of some people to the whole board. Some people don't like this deal or don't like how much we paid, but not everyone. You also make a lot of baseless statements. I doubt "we'll" be upset if Soriano plays up to his contract. We are all Cubs fans after all, and just want to see this team succeed and win a championship once every 100 years at least.

How is he overrated? Please no stats involved. Your opinion.

And I agree with you that he doesn't deserve to get a $136 million dollar contract. But I will never consider him to be overrated.

Quick question, and sorry if I missed it, but did the Cubs name a hitting coach yet? Have I been living under a rock and just missed it?

You've been living under a rock.

They hired Gerald Perry away from Oakland.

Gotcha. Last question: when did this happen?

How in the blue hell are you supposed to say what you think of a player without going off of stats?

I just think that Im somewhat entitled to my opinion and dont need to have someone comepletely critizing me even if they disagree with me.

You're entitled to an opinion. you shouldn't be surprised when people think that your opinion is of very little value when you base it on ignorance.

I wish everyone would stop crying about how Soriano's or DeRosa's are such bad deals. Face the reality! This is what this years market is. The past couple years we've lamented how bad other big deals were and even commended Hendry on his safe and below market signings.

The fact is: the money is there and Hendry is going to spend it. TV made these astronomical contracts possible and I for one am not gonna whine about it. The Cubs just acquired the 2 best FA this year (one below market and one above market) and i'm gonna be happy about that.

Next I'm gonna wait for Hendry to spend more dollars on a good FA SP and another league average SP to round out the rotation. Go Cubs! Win it all in the next 3 years (that is what these signings are all about, not the year 2014)

Murray Chass / The New York Times[/url]"]News reports in recent weeks have indicated that the Tribune Company may sell its newspapers and its baseball team, and a deal the Cubs have concluded with a free agent lends credence to that likelihood. If Tribune were going to hold onto the Chicago Cubs, the Cubs would not be signing Alfonso Soriano to an eight-year contract for $136 million.

Dusty Baker, Piniella’s predecessor, may very well ask why the Cubs didn’t spend that kind of money during his four years as their manager. But spending that kind of money has never been the Tribune Company’s style, nor the style of Andy MacPhail, whose resignation as the Cubs’ president and chief executive is effective today.

The timing of MacPhail’s departure and Soriano’s signing might be coincidental, but it’s hard to believe that MacPhail would have authorized the amount of money or number of years. It seems that someone in the Cubs’ hierarchy has given Hendry the green light to offer uncharacteristically large sums of money, knowing that the Tribune Company won’t be paying the bills for much longer.

There was talk yesterday that the Cubs may use Soriano, who will turn 31 in January, in center field as a replacement for Juan Pierre, also a free agent. But some baseball executives were incredulous at that prospect.

They also questioned the size of the package the Cubs gave Soriano, saying it was far too much for a leadoff hitter. That kind of money, they suggested, should be saved for a middle-of-the-lineup hitter, a run producer like Rodriguez and Manny Ramírez.

Besides that I really doubt someone trying to catch up cares whos on what side and moreso what each view is, not to mention details.
