According to a thread at BCB Dave Kaplan on WGN radio is reporting the deal as $90 million, no mention of years. That makes more sense.

starting to feel better...regaining optimism.

I'd love that...

But espn already announced it at 8/136...I bet Kaplan is wrong.

JUst like ESPN was right when Maddux signed with the Yankees instead of the Cubs. :)

I hope Kaplan is right (and is reporting the guaranteed years).

WOW! Let the speculation begin to the actual years. The deal is supposed to be finalized and announced tomorrow. We will see soon enough.

So as it stands now, do the Cubs do this:

Soriano CF

DeRosa 2B

Lee 1B

Aram 3B

JJones RF

Barrett C

Murton LF

Izturis SS

So the Cubs now have the best lineup in the division.

And I see no way the pitching staff can be any worse. At the least, we probably won't have to start 15 different pitchers or whatever the nuts number was.

Didn't you hear? We got Neal Cotts.

Yeah, when it comes out i bet its 5 years with 3 option years. I'd be more than fine with that.

Player options, of course.

Eh.

I understand people are all "outraged" that we spent so much money for such a long time. But, the way I see it: Yeah, its a poor contract. But Hendry and the cubs organization are proving they want to win. They are proving they are actually, for the first time since i've been a fan, willing to go out and shell out cash for a good player.

Except this wasn't the guy to shell out the cash for, and for 8 years??? Holy crap.

I think that'll be the lineup next year. I bet JH will now turn his attention to SP pitching.

I'd rather they did this:

2B Theriot

LF Murton

CF Soriano

3B Ramirez

1B DLee (until back to form, then swap with Soriano)

RF Jones

CA Barrett

SS Izturis

I'm still holding out hope that we sign Drew and trade Jones, and/or sign Lugo for SS. If we can add one or two of the decent SPs that are available (Padilla, Westbrook), we have a real contender next year.

I think a good barometer to how good of a signing this is, is to see all the "now if we just trade for manny", or "now if we just signe drew" posts in this thread....it might just be a reflection of crazy optimistic posters, or it might be a reflection of how unsure we are that Sori ias actually going to be a significant upgrade. Color me the later.

If he's on the roster and healthy, he'll be starting. Not advocating it, just saying.

I agree, the lineup still needs a big bat in the 6th spot, Im not holding out any hope for Jones.

Im not sold on Westbrook just yet, but depending on what we can get for him I would be ok with that with him in the #4 or #5 spot. The porblem is we need a #2 or #3 type starter and IMO Padilla and Westbrook are not it.

God! Can we put Theriot at short? The thought of RonCe or Izzy at short gives makes me vomit.

Good point and we should be wanting ARod instead!

A lot of posters don't just want to contend we want to win it all. Adding another bat with Fonzie will show that.

Wow. We actually signed a top FA.

I don't know what to think about the contract. I guess we'll have to wait and see if it's actually 8 years, $138 million or 5 years, $90 million with 3 option years. If it's 5 years and $90 million I can deal with that. If it's 8 years I'm gonna cry.

Ditto. This is a horrible move - Cub fans will rue this day for years.
