Jeez. $2.5m per? Our payroll better be upwards of $120m at this rate.

I really think Soto could have done whatever Blanco is going to do at a tenth of that cost.

Agreed. This is an eh move but you're right Soto could have been our backup.

And no eh move means much on its own. The problem comes in when you have a series of eh moves and you end up spending $10-15 million on worthless ballplayers that could easily be replaced for a handful of guys combining to make $2 million.

And thus far we have 2 eh moves that are eating up $6.8m of payroll, when we arguably have able replacements at league minimum.

Hendry is repeating past mistakes.

Mr Prior will at least be happy. Maybe he'll try and get healthy so he can throw to Blanco and not Barrett. Levine also mentioned that Meche is next on hendrys list, oh good........................ :(

Hendry is in a bad mood, and that's affecting his GM skills. If he was happy, he'd be doing a better job.

And he takes a few plays per game off. Plays when he feels like it.

I can't believe I actually let myself believe Hendry was changing his MO after the coaching hirings. I'm so stupid. This will be the same old garbage.

I can't wait for the "all you people do is complain" crowd to berate me for not being a true believer.

Anyone got a salary update?? How much is left in the pot??

Assuming $14 for Aramis in 2007, $4.0 for DeRosa in 2007, $2.5 for Hank in 2007, one kid in the starting lineup, one kid on the bench, one kid in the rotation, and two kids in the bullpen, I show $31.3 left out of a $115 payroll.

Going quickly by the payroll sticky on the top of the page and adding in DeRosa and Blanco (assuming the totals are split evenly among the years since I haven't heard otherwise), there's a total of ~$85M committed.

If the upper payroll estimates of $115M are accurate, that leaves ~$30M not committed.

As can be quickly ascertained, in this market that's not going to be enough to allow Hendry to fill team needs by going Premier FA shopping.

I can see why he signed Blanco 2 years ago, that one at least made sense. Barrett was a maligned hitter, it was somewhat risky to not have a backup. After MB's last 2 years that risk is gone. I dont see the point of spending this money on Blanco again. This contract wont kill the Cubs and Henry can be traded, but i guess i just dont really get it.

If Hendry was the GM of Pittsburgh he could have gotten the same type of player, but would have paid less because he had to. Giving Hendry more money to spend doesn't seem to make him better able to acquire good baseball players. He can just afford to overpay more of the same mediocre talent.

This, in a nutshell, is what is wrong with our GM. Well said.

Hendry wouldnt want to go there. He couldnt fulfill his philantropic duties and give the lower class of baseball contracts to be 'set for life'. Really im wondering if the GM of the Cubs is a philathropist in sheeps clothing.

Penny foolish, pound foolish.

Fixed.

Seriously, I like brining Blanco back....but that's just a little too pricey man....jeeez....

This is a baseball club, not a baseball team. We have to treat our members well.

How is this going to affect Hank White's presidential bid in '08

Damn. I guess I was too pessimistic with my 2/$5.5 prediction.

What a stupid, unnecessary, stupid move.
