So at what point do we begin to deal or deroster the 13 catchers on our 40 man?

I stilll see no reason that Blanco was retained. Hill pitched very well to Soto, Soto makes league minimum and will probably put up similarly bad offensive numbers. The fact that Blanco was retained at that cost is just insane.

Wow, you all freak out about the littlest things. We know what Hank brings and its not like he's making starting catcher money. He's our backup, calls a great game, cut down other teams running, and is limited with the bat. I'll take my chances with Hank over Soto at this point. Calm down.

No.

Why can't we be fed up with a team continually overpaying for mediocrity but almost always acting like overpaying for quality players is some kind of crime? A lot of us are sick of it.

if the market value for bad backup catchers is $2.5 million a year, teams like Pittsburgh and KC have no chance ever

Cubs will have to improve their game to pass Pittsburgh in the standings.

I really don't mind about Hendry overpaying (it's his MO) What i do object to is he never overpays quality players. At least if he threw a bucketload of dosh at Drew or Soriano you can argue if they are worth it or not but what you can't doubt is they would definetely help this team win. We will be the '06 cubs all over again we've just payed $15mill more for the pleasure.

Let's put it this way..We leave Soto as our backup catcher, not resign Blanco, not sign DeRosa take that money and sign Lugo as our 2B. I would rather have Lugo and Soto over DeRosa and Blanco.

Same old Hendry and the Cubs, overpaying for crap.

Typically, this is what your minor league system is for: not necessarily to produce a star at every position, but to be able to fill out your roster with capable, low-cost players.

Yeah, it's great that the Cubs are adding payroll, but Hendry has yet to show any fiscal common sense. These small deals add up. Think about it, you've now got 6.8 million dollars tied up in DeRose/Blanco -- both players coming off career years. Read that again, 6.8 million dollars! For Mark DeRosa and Henry Blanco!

Yet Hendry continues to whiff on the big free agents like Carlos Beltran and Rafeal Furcal. When some other team makes the definitive offer, the excuse is always "we didn't want to go that far" or "we weren't going to pay that much." Shyea right.

This is why I think it would be almost better for the Cubs to have a 30-40 million dollar payroll. At least then, the Cubs would have to get serious about player development and payroll management. Anything's got to be better than Jim Hendry's annual shopping spree.

These overpaid role players add up very quickly. Hendry must have no memory of his past mistakes. No matter what the some "glass half full people" , these contracts will have an impact on the overall payroll.

you assume he considers those past contracts "mistakes"

Rotoworld always puts things into nice persepective:

Cubs re-signed Henry Blanco to a two-year contract with a mutual option for 2009.

The sudden trend of handing out multi-year deals to mediocre bench players is an odd one and the bug seems to have been passed from Wayne Krivsky to Jim Hendry. Blanco will continue to back up Michael Barrett, which thankfully limits the damage he can do to the Cubs' offense.

Again, it's a pattern:

$4.15 to Izturis

$4.5 to DeRosa

$3.25 to Rusch

$2.5 to Blanco

It's $14.4 million. It's not the "littlest thing"

Exactly. It's not that he is forgetful; he just isn't all that good a GM.

You're assuming that those four positions on the team would be adequately filled by people making $0. You have to assume that the people there are at least making something.

Lots of money, yet won't shell out an additional mil for a larger acquisition like Furcal.

It makes no sense, and is one big reason why the Cubs have fallen so far, so fast.

4 players at an average of $400,000 each, combines to $1.6m. Make one of those guys a millionaire veteran and the total cost is $2.2 million, leaving $12.2 million on the table for somebody, or somebodies, who can actually help the team get better.

Hendry is like one of these cretins who pay $5 every day for a cup of Starbuck's coffee and then whine that they have no retirement fund.
