Wow. A good move for Detroit, as Sheffield can play first if he's willing. Sanchez is a real good pitcher, but the Tigers have no shortage of young, talented arms.

I thought the "top prospect" was gonna be Maybin.

great move by the Yanks, not very good for the tigers- they got alot of young, impressionable guys- i dont think i would want Sheff anywhere near them- plus i have set an over/under on the first Leyland-Sheffield war of words- 60 games- i'm taking the under-

Wow I wanted Sheff for maybe a reliever or a couple mid-level prospects, but with that price(one of your best future arms, and some minor leaguers) there is no way the Cubs should have wanted him.

Sanchez is one of the top 5 pitching prospects in all of baseball. They could have gotten Miguel Cabrera for a package with Sanchez as the headliner.

WOW. Amazing steal by the Yanks.

The Tigers are thinking NOW.......they figure their window is open next year, so they're trying to add a piece to put them over the top.

That's a large piece of your future to mortgage, though. The Yanks continue to get what they what, year in and year out. Let's just hope the bad karma continues to hold and they chokarama once more.

Detroit got 754 OPS out of first base last year (26th in the league) and 768 OPS out of DH last year (9th in the AL). Sheff will likely bring about 150 additional OPS to whichever postition they use him at. Thats quite an upgrade. Maybe Dombrowski is going to be this years K-dub.

i don't think he's going to provide that big of a boost, personally.

NO!

But seriously. Even going by numbers alone I wouldn't put him in the top 10 right handed starters, much less overall.

I think scouts would put him far below that, like in the 20-30 range.

I'd definitely take the Tigers' deal over the offer of Linebrink + mid-level prospects or the rumored Wuertz + mid-level prospects. It's a no brainer, but Sheffield didn't net an elite prospect by any means.

I'm not seeing what's so great about Sanchez. He's the top prospect they gave up?

He throws hard, has good stuff and put up pretty good numbers this year. I agree that he's not one of the top 5 pitching prospects in the minors, but he was probably the Tigers' best trading chip this offseason. He's certainly more valuabe than Wuertz

He put up good numbers in AA, but he was 23, and he was mediocre when he got promoted. McKamey's prospect book says he has a decent fastball that runs 88-92 mph, with a similar caliber curve and lesser change. BA had a more optimistic report on his stuff, but added he had sketchy mechanics at times and his conditioning was an issue. He may have been the Tigers' best trading chip, but he doesn't seem like that fantastic a prospect. Similar to Nolasco last offseason, actually.
