You and your damn stats....

But, this is the Cubs. He'll come here, play five games, then simultaneously break both his tibias and fibias, tear both ACL's, MCL's and Patellar tendons, and dislocate both ankles dving in the outfield.

...and the Cubs' staff would still be incapable of diagnosing the problem.

Also, sign Drew.

But he'd win the Lifetime Movie of the Month award for saddest story....

where's that from, abuck?

If we go after Drew, we'd better not give him an opt out clause.

I wouldn't be opposed to giving him 4/$56 ish type contract, with an opt-out after 2 years. It's potential that in 2 years we won't be on the hook for his deal (which he may or may not live up to).

Still, if it took a two year opt out clause to get him to sign, give it. If he outplays his contract, i'll take my chances in two years.

I'd give Drew an opt out after 2 years. His next 2 years are bound to be better than the ones that follow. Might as well get the best two remaining years out of him, and then let him walk if he wants more money.

Easy to say now, but look at the reaction on Ramirez. It took adding the opt-out clause to sign him also, and the pitch-forks are being readied.

Personally, I think Drew's opt-out is the best news for the Cubs. It gives the Cubs a legitimate CF option that allows them to retain Murton in LF. And, having a 2-year opt-out clause for Drew is a good thing for the Cubs, because it doesn't block Pie indefinately.

A player opt-out clause is NEVER a good thing.

It may be a necessary evil in getting a player to sign his name, but it is always bad for the club.

For that matter, having to pay a guy to play isn't a good thing for the club either.

I heard only recently that Drew had an opt out clause. A day later, he opted out. Awesome!

I'd have given up a lot to bring Drew. Now he can be signed as a free agent. Okay, Jim. Bring back Aramis and reel in Drew.

If they signed both of these guys, I actually wouldn't mind hanging on to Jones unless someone wowed me into trading him. That actually takes a lot for me to say, because I am not in the least bit enamored with Jones in any way. Murton, Drew and Jones in the outfield works for me.

When Pie is ready, Jones can be traded for pitching or another need.

2b and SS is where the Cubs can then spin a horrible offense into a good offense.

I still really like the idea of sending a boatload of prospects to Florida, Dontrelle Willis goes to the Yankees and A-Rod comes to Chicago.

I'm of the opinion that absolute declarations rarely, if ever, hold-up.

Well, this is one of those rare occasions.

What is with all of this love for Drew? Here is a guy who has never had 600 AB's in a season, and has only had one healthy season with the Braves and even then he only had 518 AB's. Have you guys seen what all these injuries have done to out team the past few years? Now you want to bring in the most-oft injured guy in baseball for over $11 mill a year? For that price I say stay away Jim.

125, 148, 158- Drew's OPS+ the last three years.

393, 412, 436- Drew's OBP the last three years.

498, 520, 569- Drew's SLG the last three years.

He's the best of the available FA for the Cubs needs. He's a better hitter than Carlos Lee. He's better defensively than Soriano. He would not be out of position playing CF. He's far and away better than GMJ. Drew is a perfect fit for the Cubs needs this offseason.

That's why the facination with Drew.

Have you looked at his last 3 years? He's played around 145 2 of the last 3 and the year he didn't was due to a freak hit by pitch broken hand. I think if he is signed to play CF, which he says is easier on his knees, he can be counted on for 140-150 games barring a freak injury.

He may not have over 600 at bats in a season, but he's had more than 600 plate appearances in a season. The value of a walk when one is not getting a hit of some sort should be of utmost concern with this team now and in the future.

While it doesn't really matter all that much in the big picture, Hendry may covet a power left handed bat if he retains Ramirez. A line up that features Murton, Barrett, Lee and Ramirez has plenty of pop from the right side. A guy who can really mash against RHP has to be considered an added bonus.

You guys all make good points, and I know the numbers are there. However, with all of these injuries that we have seen over the last few years I'm kinda weary of bringin in guys who are always injured.

It's fine to be weary. And if Jim can find better options, that would be great. But beggers can't be choosers, and this team is desperate for increased productivity.

For the last 3 years, his only injury is a broken hand. We should get rid of Derrek Lee if that's the case.

Agreed goony. I'd be more leary of having a worse offensive outfield than we had last year. *shudder*

Get Drew, move Jacque to CF and resign ARam and I would be happy with this offense.

I think they would also need to pick up one of the many 2b options available this offseason also.

The list is long at that spot:

Soriano

Kent

Durham

Giles

Loretta

Lugo

Walker

Iwamura
