As the time winds down, we are getting close to when he will have to make a desicion. Do you think Ramirez will end up staying with the Cubs? I realize there is a Ramirez thread, but I want one just geared toward what you think will happen?

I think he stays. I think the contract will be about $14.5 mil for 5 years. .

Yes. Because if ARam goes bye-bye, then Hendry is prolly a half-season (or a VERY BAD start to the 2007 season) away from being fired. Re-signing goes a little bit of ways to help Hendry secure his job.

I think Hendry and the Cubs want him to stay, and he'll likely end up with at least 14 million for 5 years, probably with a NTC for most of that.

That said, however, part of me can't help but worry Hendry and the Cubs will screw this up and he gets away.

Aramis stays. I think he gets 5 years/85 million, with an option for a sixth if he plays years four and five at say, 270 games. Just a guess.

Jim H. cannot let Aramis get away, otherwise he may as well clean out his office. And he would NEVER survive the Cubs Convention without Secret Service protection.

To me, it's pretty obvious that Hendry thinks he is expendable. A contract would have been worked out already if that was not the case. Hendry has overpaid many times for mediocre talent, why would he not meet ARam's request when there is so much more on his plate?

He's as good as gone, imo.

I go back and forth on this every day. Right now, I say he signs with the Cubs because Hendry promises him he's going to make some bold moves this season and the Cubs will be a contender.

Whether or not Hendry will actually make said "bold" moves will be an interesting question (I'm not holding my breath).

Personally I think JH is just waiting for this week's org meetings to guage what Uncle Lou's opinion on Aramis is. If Lou gives the go ahead, then Hendry will call and work out that contract in 10 minutes.

If Lou says, "Meh, I don't really want that lazy SOB.", then I think he lets him go and goes with other options...whatever those lame options are.

He'll do something dumb then, like sign Nomar to play 3b, and then in the second game of the season he'll tear both his legs off at the hips running out a grounder.

If they lose Aramis, the smart thing would be to blow up the team. That's not gonna happen though, and it could get real ugly if they have to fill another gigantic hole in the lineup.

The fact that we haven't heard any positive update at any point leads me to believe that Hendry is stupid enough to think the team is better off without Ramirez.

I hope I'm wrong. I really, really do.

As many of you have brought up, Jim as to realize that cutting Ramirez lose is likely going to cost him his job, unless he pulls off some remarkable trade (which, I would hope he could do WITH Aramis on the team). I guess that belief is keeping me going, that Hendry is committing career suicide by not resigning him.

He's gone, bye bye Jim.

Did anyone listen to WGN radio sports reports yesterday afternoon or Sports Central? My dad was in the car and he thinks he heard David Kaplan say that Aramis will be signed by Saturday after he gets a few more bucks.

Can anyone confirm?

Somebody posted this in the opt out thread as well. Kaplan was heard to say that Aramis is using Friday's deadline as leverage to get as much money as possible, but that he wants to stay in Chicago and to expect to have a deal done by Friday.

If that happens, I'll be so happy and suprised.

I am holding out hope up until the date when guys can start to negotiate with other teams. If it reaches that point, I can't see him staying.

I don't believe in the theory that Hendry HAS to keep Ramirez to keep his job. I do believe, however, that turning this team into a winner, without Ramirez, would be far too difficult for Hendry to accomplish at this stage of the game.

I agree. If Anaheim gets to negotiate with him, it's over, IMO.

I agree. I think because it will be so much more difficult to win sooner rather than later without Ramirez, that Hendry is motivated to resign Aramis, though he won't back himself into the corner of believing he has to in order to keep his job.

That said, I think the great likelihood is that Aramis returns to the Cubs. If he isn't signed by the 11th, the chances of that drops, but not the point were it becomes highly unlikely that he returns.

I dunno, CW. I agree with XZero that if Anaheim gets the chance they'll throw a ton of money at Aramis. I don't want them involved in any bidding war.

Yeah, I heard that too. Very encouraging, IMO, since Kaplan has been money on his scoops lately - MacPhail being the opt out clause creator and Aramis getting a full NTC for the first two years of his contract.

When was it confirmed that Ramirez had a full NTC?
