Dusty Baker seems genuinely interested in managing the Padres, who will give him an interview on Monday. But like Oakland, the Padres don't seem to value high-profile managers, which will make it an upset if San Diego President Sandy Alderson goes to ownership to get a top-tier salary for Baker. Perhaps Baker will take less on the West Coast, but this smacks of window dressing. … The Blue Jays are making a last-ditch effort to sign left-hander Ted Lilly, who figures to be pursued by the Cubs and several other teams if he isn't sign during the exclusive negotiating window that ends next Saturday. … Along with Lilly and Japanese ace Daisuke Matsuzaka, right-hander Miguel Batista is on the Cubs' radar. … Gary Sheffield reportedly has put both Chicago teams on the list of clubs to which he would accept a trade without a fight. … The Phillies are shopping right-hander Jon Lieber, who was 9-11 with a 4.93 earned-run average this season and is due $7.5 million next year. Lieber and young pitchers Gavin Floyd and Ryan Madson could go to the Yankees in a package for Sheffield. … Japanese third baseman Akinori Iwamura, a left-handed hitter who has hit at least .300 with 30-plus homers the last three years for the Yakult Swallows, also is being posted. Philadelphia, San Diego, Cleveland and Boston are among the teams who are interested. Would the Cubs get involved if talks with Aramis Ramirez keep going nowhere? They spent a lot of money scouting Asia this year. … Don Wakamatsu, who was Buck Showalter's bench coach, appears to be the front-runner in Texas over Hillman and Oakland third-base coach Ron Washington. … The Washington search remains a mess, with the latest rumors involving Joe Girardi once again being a candidate.

Seems like philly would be paying a pretty steep price there for Sheffield.

Looks like Hendry has targeted getting a guy like Schmidt/Matzuka/Zito and Lilly/Batista/Kuroda and a big bat Lee/Soranio/Wells/.

I have not seen Hendry linked to Padilla yet this offseason but I would much prefer him over guys like Lilly and Batista.

Rotoworld

Some stupid guy with initials for a first name disagrees with Roger's assemesment of the Jays effor to sign Lilly. If thats not an easy way to discredit everything you say, I don't know what is.

That's a huge price to pay for Sheffield. If that's what the Phillies are offering, I hope the Cubs don't try to come close to competing with it. Lilly and Batista have been nothing more than average pitchers in their career. Batista is about a lock to be nothing more in the near future either, considering he'll be 36 next season and coming off 3 straight years between a 101-109 ERA+. Lilly has actually been worse over the course of his career. It could be interesting to see what he could do in the NL for the first time, and at 31 next year, could still have a couple of seasons like 2004 in him (120 ERA+).

Kuroda seems like easily the best option of the "2nd tier" pitchers the Cubs have been linked too. Padilla would also be, IMO, a very nice pickup, but could get paid like he's in the top tier.

Me and a friend of mine a cardinals fan talk about the offseason every year and I tell him some mediocre, junk player that Hendry will sign and piss me off with. In 2005 I predicted Jeromy Burnitz and the Cubs signed him. In 2006 I predicted Jaque Jones, so what does Hendry do sign Jaque Jones. This year I told him that Hendry would sign Miguel Batistsa. I was happy until today because I had not seen his name mentioned. If Hendry signs Batista or Lilly I will be disappointed. They are both nothing more than average middle of the road, older pitchers. Since you have to get a lower end of the rotation starter. Why not get someone like Kuroda, Padilla, Mulder, or Eaton? Players with upside, not players whose average careers are going past there prime.

Can Mulder be labeled as someone with upside at this stage?

I'd probably lean towards "risky".

I think there is both. Generally is something is a risk, there is upsidde if it pans out. He is still around 30 years old so he can turn it around. He has shown in the past that he can be a dominant pitcher, and maybe when his injury heals up he will revert to his old form.

Jones had the best year of all possible LF free agent options. He was far from a junk player. . . . .but I know what you mean about the Cubs and FA signings.

In my lifetime, the best one they've had was the one that gave 'em a blank contract and the cubs proceeded to give him a low ball salary. Pure luck was the only reason we got the Hawk.

I'd steer clear of Mulder because of the injury. A personal anecdote about Mulder. My son played against him in high school and got two hits off of him. My son was never an offensive threat, so I feel that Mulder is nothing special.

If the cubs get matsuzaka, is there any chance they still pursue kuroda? Or do they avoid having two guys w/o MLB experience in the rotation + Hill(even though Matsuzaka seems to be projecting to be a pretty safe bet right now.)

I have multiple objections to this idea of signing Mark Mulder:

How is Mulder, who will be 30 next year, that much younger than the "older" Ted Lilly, who will be 31 next year?

So you want to spend significant dollars on a "name" pitcher who is, as you put it waiting for his injury to heal? Wow, haven't we learned our lesson about injured pitchers?

Lilly will be making the transition from the AL East to NL Central, admittedly an easier place to pitch.

Lilly would probably cost less.

Great idea! People like Mulder are just what we need, considering we haven't been burned by injured pitchers in the past. If we're going for upside, should we resign Wood to be in the rotation too? Slot him in with Miller and Prior?

I would personally rather have Lilly over the 2nd tier options. Matsuzaka and Lilly would make me giddy.
