Check out the differences in league leaders between 1991 and 2006!!!

Wow. Power and strikeouts are waaay up, and the bullpen is much more active with less complete games. But stolen bases are relatively the same. And MAN is there a HUGE difference in OBP. I mean gigantic....

This got me looking up the players on the lists.

Holy crap, I forgot how amazing Will Clark's last season was. Clark quietly put together a brilliant career that won't be recognized because he didn't have HOF longevity. Yet another reason I love Baseball Reference.

I did the same with Bagwell earlier today when some stupid writer pontificated whether or not he'd get in the HOF. His numbers are a lot better than I remembered. The guy had 300 total bases in the strike season with a 1201 OPS (213 OPS+). His yearly OPS+ didnt drop below 130 until his 13 year in the league (when he put up an 897 OPS and was 14th in MVP voting). That is just ridiculous offensive production.

Other fun with baseball-reference...in 2001 Bonds more than doubled the park adjusted league slugging 863 vs 422 and got close to repeating in 2002.

guess it proves numbers don't mean everything

Well what it really means is you have to put those numbers in context.

Andre Dawson, Will Clark, and Alan Trammell (and Will Clark) whole heartedly agree with you.

Will Clark's 89 playoff run was almost enough to warrent HOF induction IMO. Of course if it happened against another team I would not give a damn.

It outshined an almost-as-impressive NLCS by Mark Grace.

HA HA HA....Howard Johnson

I had completely forgotten about HoJo's retched final season with the Cubs. The guy hit .195 that year, yet his OBP was equal to our 2006 leadoff hitter. At least he could still take a walk.
