How much difference in terms of production would there be between an outfield of:

Murton (LF) - Soriano (CF) - Jones (RF)

and an outfield of:

CLee (LF) - Jones (CF) - Murton (RF)

If you're thinking along those lines go with:

Burrell (LF) - Jones (CF) - Murton (RF) --OR--

Burrell (LF) - Pie (CF) - Sheffield (RF)

Scary defense, but how many runs would it really cost you? Pagan makes a passable late-innings defensive replacement.

i've never understood how crappy hitters that are little and fast get labeled good defenders regardless of their actual ability. pagan is a hack out there.

not that i care about late inning defensive replacements.

how is 6'1 little? as far as his defense goes, inside pitch's scouting report would disagree with your assement:

Soriono is not getting 17/season.

The major players...Yankees, Mets, Red Sox don't appear intersted...a market consisting of Cubs, ANgels...etc won't be enough to drive his salary that high.

It only takes two teams...or 1 team if Boras is involved. There will be plenty of teams giving token interest that will get him up to a high level. I think Soriano will probably go to the team who will offer him the longest contract even if its a mil or two lower per year. If he can get a team taht will go 7 years 16M per he should take it over a team that offers 5 years 18M. In order to equal the $, he would have to sign a 2 yr 22M in his late 30s. Plus if he gets injured he will be out the $. The good news is that the cubs definitely do not like the long term contract. Although that seemed more of a MacPhail thing than a Hendry team. But I guess we will see with what he does with ARam.

The Baltimore Orioles, according to a team source, began preliminary discussions with Washington Nationals left fielder Alfonso Soriano , and were floored by the free agent's initial contract outline.

According to the source, Soriano is seeking a deal similar to the seven-year, $119 million deal given to center fielder Carlos Beltran by the New York Mets before the 2005 season.

Holy Schnikeees!

(And no wonder Ramirez opted for FA. He'll get more than Alphonso!)

FYI, Beltran signed a pretty reasonable contract because of all of the deferred money...heres his contract

2005 10M + 7M bonus

2006 12M + 2M bonus

2007 12M + 2M bonus

2008 10M

2009 10M

2010 10M

2011 10M

2012 3.1M in deferred $

2013 3.1M in deferred $

2014 3.1M in deferred $

2015 3.1M in deferred $

2016 3.1M in deferred $

2017 3.1M in deferred $

2018 3.1M in deferred $

12M more is deferred but not explicitly stated when it is paid

Not that I would want to pay Soriano all that $ after two of his last three years in an extreme hitters park hes put up OPS+ of 98 and 110

Soriano's 2006 offensive numbers = fluke. Soriano's defense is terrible. Soriano's interest in returning to the AL is considerable. I hope Hendry isn't thinking about getting involved in the bidding, I don't want him.

Too late.

According to this, the Phillies are prepared to offer Soriano a 5/80 contract. That's 16 million per year for those scoring at home. Soriano may get that 17 million a year after all.

Well, if they get Soriano and deal Burrell to the Cubs for not much talent, I'd be o.k. with that. It seems like under that scenario a team that would eat a lot of money could give up little in talent.

Schnikes. So Gillick doesn't want Burrell and his bloated contract, but wants to give a 30 yr old with a history of avg plate discipline an even more bloated deal.

BTW, the title of this thread reminds me of Anchorman:

"I look good...I mean really good..."
